Yesterday marks a significant milestone for me: one year at ALDI SüD International Buying! ?? As I reflect on the past year, I'm grateful for the incredible opportunities and invaluable lessons learned along the way. Here are the three key insights that have defined my journey: 1. Embracing Change: In a dynamic industry like ours, being open to change is not just a skill; it's a mindset. Over the past year, I've learned the importance of adaptability and embracing new ways of thinking. Leadership Development: Working at ALDI SüD International Buying has provided me with invaluable opportunities to hone my leadership skills. I couldn't believe my VP at L'Oréal did this. And it's the #1 lesson in leadership I ever learned ?? Let's back track. I was a few months into my new job at L'Oréal. I was invited to a week long training called Discovery where we learned all about the different departments, functions and opportunities within the organization. Throughout the week, we had different managers, directors, VPs and C-level executives join us for a variety of presentations. But I'll never forget this 1 moment. The VP of our luxury division came into the room. I hadn't met him before but I could immediately tell that he loved his role and embodied luxury from his poise, demeanour and aesthetic. To some degree, I instinctively felt he would be more standoffish and not as approachable, but he proved me wrong. Instead of starting his presentation at the front of the room like everyone else did that week... He came around the room and shook every single hand of the 50 junior employees there. For each handshake, he introduced himself, asked our names and which departments we were in and took a keen interest in each of us individually. This 1 gesture showed me everything I needed to know about this man. He showed me that effective leadership isn't about titles. It isn't about status or the level of seniority you're at. It isn't even about how long you've been in a certain company. He showed me it's about integrity, respect, kindness and empowerment of your people, regardless of how junior or senior they are. A year later, I joined his division and could attest that what he demonstrated in that Discovery week was not an isolated incident. This was his way of being and that was a big inspiration for me in the leader that I became towards my teams. Who's 1 person that has had a lasting impact on you in your career? I recently attended the Women Leadership Development Programme arranged by foodpanda at Lahore University of Management Sciences and the 3 days were truly transformational. The case studies, role plays, class discussions, quality questions, self assessments, panel discussions, one-on-ones, and the knowledge of the professors all added up to a huge shift in perspective, knowledge and self-awareness. Here are a few key learnings I'd like to share with my LinkedIn network: The only secret sauce for any business is that it must make money while delivering more value for that money than anyone else in the world. You must have passion for your customers, whether internal or external. An organization with strong values and purpose will always cultivate higher levels of ownership and trust, leading to better business outcomes. As you grow in your role, you'll need more Emotional Quotient (EQ) than Intelligence Quotient (IQ). Always be a problem solver—companies need them. There are many more insights that I will share in future posts. But the major takeaway here is self-awareness: everything begins with it. “There are no mature brands, only mature brand managers”. ??-Peter Brabeck-Letmathe, former Chairman & CEO, Nestle SA ? I was recently thinking back to one of my favorite experiences in my 10 years with Nestle, which was taking part in a 2-week Marketing Leadership course at world headquarters in Vevey, Switzerland.?As part of the training, about 2 dozen marketing directors and managers from around the globe got to hear from senior leaders and learn from best practices across the company. In addition to spending evenings at the famed Montreux Jazz Festival, one of the highlights of the experience was Mr. Brabeck’s speech to the group.?He is one of the most brilliant leaders I’ve ever met and a true visionary. During his talk, he challenged us in numerous ways, including the statement quoted above.?What he was saying was that brands can and should stay relevant to consumers, no matter how long they’ve been around. The only limitation to that is the brand managers’ own insights & creativity. As someone whose brand portfolio at the time included brands ranging from 30 to 300 years old (yes, you heard that right, 300 years old), I was inspired to do everything in my power to make sure my brands were relevant.?In fact, my team & I led a re-stage of that 300-year-old brand which made it relevant again and turned a long-term decline into a double-digit growth rate. (Maybe I’ll share more on that story another time). Keeping brands relevant is not easy.?It takes creativity, resourcefulness, a focus on deeply understanding your consumers, and many more skills.?But, perhaps the most important are belief and the tenacity to make it so.
