When I reflect on my time at university, the thing I regret the most is not getting more coaching experience. When I graduated, I knew all of the theory, but I couldn’t coach. It probably took me a few years of coaching to feel like I had any clue what I was doing ?? If you’re at university now, take it upon yourself to make sure you’re getting plenty of coaching experience, whilst you’re studying. Even if it’s just coaching in a commercial gym, that experience will be invaluable in the long run. #strengthandconditioning #strengthandconditioningcoach

The best players rarely make the best coaches. They don’t know how to teach certain skills because they never had to learn them. It turns out the best coaches are good at coaching.

So what makes a high achieving Coach? I have deployed many coaches into coaching roles during my career. It is great to see their development and how they progress within the Industry. Many years pass and suddenly I will get a call from a Coach thanking me for my support as they achieve their goals, whatever they maybe. It is usually from Coaches that have become Head Coaches at large venues. So what makes a high achieving Coach? What makes them special? A great Coach has many skill sets but the overriding factor EVERY time is CONSISTENCY. Consistently: turning up early; reflecting and improving their performance; reflecting and improving their players' performance; learning new coaching skills; communicating well with others; being a team player; and many more. A Coach may be the most gifted on court with playing standard and feeding skills but without true CONSISTENCY of the fundamentals they will not succeed in the long term. What other areas where a Coach needs CONSISTENCY have i missed?
