The US Department of State had intermittent problems with its Global Telecommunications Services (GTS) data center facilities in Maryland. Between 2016 and 2018, GTS had moved assets to this facility from a commercially-managed colocation facility that was then decommissioned. GTS management found several “alarming defects,” according to an internal report, and did not want to expose data center personnel to suspected hazards. So they ordered a temporary shutdown and brought in the International Data Center Authority (IDCA) to conduct a full-fledged AE360? data center audit and assessment to identify certification and compliance gaps according to the Infinity Paradigm and subsequently provide recommendations as to the optimum rectification remedies to the issues found. UK government has officially designated data centres as Critical National Infrastructure (CNI), as it looks to further boost investment in the UK’s critical hubs of digital information. ? With this new status, data centres will receive extra government support to protect crucial data, financial information, and personal smartphone data against major incidents such as cyberattacks, IT outages and extreme weather. This means that in a major incident, such as a cyber-attack, IT outage or extreme weather, the UK government would provide data centre operators extra support to minimise disruption. ? This is the first CNI designation since 2015 when the space and defence sectors were granted the same status. This is an interesting development that I want to research. The demands of future data centers on the utility grid will become a real issue in 2025.
