But what is the SPEEDTAP trial, you ask???? We’re investigating whether we can?reduce the drainage time and hospital length of stay?for patients with pleural effusion attending the?emergency department.??? ? Here’s how it works: ???Half of the patients are randomized to?active drainage in the emergency department. ???The other half follow?standard of care?with referral to radiology and passive drainage. ? Recently, I had the privilege of attending the first Recurrent FSGS Conference, hosted by Dr. Simone Sanna-Cherci and the Torgow family of Detroit, Michigan, at the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill. The event showcased the power of collaboration among families, medical professionals, researchers, funders, and political figures in raising awareness about #rfsgs (Recurrent Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis). This condition poses a significant risk post-kidney transplant, potentially leading to graft failure. It is a unique and challenging biological occurrence. Special appreciation goes to the Cherchi and Torgow families for organizing this impactful and inspiring conference. By bringing together doctors, scientists, and patients with a shared mission to find a cure for Recurrent FSGS, the event facilitated crucial collaboration, data, and findings sharing, and information exchange to advance research and encourage investments from the government and private sector to secure a cure for Recurrent FSGS. ASPHALION's Christopher Mann and Jon Giblin attended, with Christopher summarizing progress in the past year and ongoing tasks. ? This initiative will provide three grants of $1,500 each to support scientists and clinicians from historically marginalized and underrepresented minority (URM) backgrounds. The grant will cover expenses such as airfare, ground transportation, lodging (two nights), meals, incidentals, and poster printing, enabling recipients to attend the Network of Minority Health Research Investigators (NMRI) Annual Workshop at NIH in Bethesda, Maryland,?from April 7–9, 2025.
