This! This important & what my doctoral work is about: equitable access to the outdoors because all kids need it! Please consider filling out the form
A few weeks ago, I shared the post below. Today, I received a response from my Senator with reassurance that she was fighting for this bill which its currently sitting with the US Senate. It reminded me yet again how amazing the REI Cooperative Action Network is in driving meaningful change. In less than 1 min, the form allowed me to submit a response to my local representatives to fight for a bill that I am passionate about-- access to green space at school for children. Her follow up today was reassuring to me that our local reps are paying attention on the other end and that my voice matters. (+ it's true: brands can be a vessel for action!) Original post: For many kids, the nearest outdoor space is at school. Yet, in many cases, there is little to no green space at school, leaving children little to no access to nature. Many schools across the country have become cement playgrounds. The Living School Yards Act, if passed, will provide grants to schools and districts to transform schoolyards into dynamic outdoor learning environments. The benefit for children is profound: 1. Growing healthy foods, trees and plants 2. Conserving water, creating wildlife habitat 3. Providing children with opportunities to observe and immerse in nature? 4. Improving mental health with more time outside 5. Improving shade coverage for weather changes 6. Creating safer space to play, create, imagine, be Access to green space is a privilege and it shouldn't be.?REI's Cooperative Action Network makes it easy for you to have a voice. It takes 30 seconds to help pass this bill by signing you name. Join me.

?? Lean practitioners, imagine facilitating daily management with experienced whiteboarders! ?? ?? Teasing aside, what age is “too early” to facilitate self-direction, autonomy, and individual + collective responsibility?! ?? Yes, I work with CEOs and relentless Improvement types to improve work by challenging their own preconceptions. But, what if those preconceptions weren’t taught to us in the first place?! School Meeting happens three times a week at Saint Louis Sudbury School. ?? This is where students and staff can make announcements, bring up discussion items, and make motions for excused absences, visitors, spending money for items or classes with the School Meeting budget, new rules, and more. This is one of the ways Sudbury students practice questioning the world around them, advocating for what they want to see happen, asking questions, listening to others, being responsible for the group as a whole, and noting what is important to them (or not!) as individuals, among many other life skills. Attending School Meeting is not required, although staff and students do encourage each other to be present for important votes that could make a big change on the entire school. https://stlsudbury.org/

Check this out: In EVERY SINGLE CITY that significantly expanded public charter schools over the past decade, ALL low-income kids (including those in district-run schools!) leapt toward state averages. The other cities? Not so much. No place should be hanging up a "mission accomplished" banner yet, but the evidence continues to mount: When you expand public school options (think: Montessori, magnet, charter, language-immersion, etc.) more kids get access to the best-fit schools that meet their needs and unlock their potential. I'm especially interested in this post by Horizon Care & Education, describing their therapeutic approach with a focus on learning spaces. Many years ago I was a regular contributor for SEND Magazine. One such article was on the learning environment & optimum learning spaces, taking as research an analysis of the teaching spaces for children with SEND across a number of schools. Audits of learning spaces, for highly vulnerable children, included - dining halls, corridors, changing rooms, outside classrooms, outside the HT's office, libraries, IT rooms... Hardly optimum learning environments. Combine that with the number of hours a typical student with SEND is out of the classroom, and there are a host of added difficulties right there. So, lots of words to say, this article pleases me on many fronts. Well done.
Across our specialist schools, we’re continually exploring ways to create therapeutic learning environments that best support the needs of our pupils. To achieve this, our Therapy and Estates teams work closely together, collaborating on thoughtful and innovative designs that enhance the educational experience for every young person. From calming spaces to engaging classrooms, we’re proud to see our vision come to life with the opening of our three new schools - Tipton Green College, Bushbury School, and Grove Road School ?? Read more from Alex Davenport, Head of SEND.
