In case anyone needs some light reading the week before the holidays start - then do we have a treat for you. FoodHQ has been working to develop a series of #thinkpieces that can disrupt some of the conversations that are happening around #food, #foodproduction, #science, #innovation, and #consumers. I am really proud to launch the next article in the series today Seeing Red: can red meat recover its glorious past? The article is written in collaboration with Vincent Heeringa, based on interviews with Nick Rowe, Olivia Ogilvie, ?? Irina Miller, Mike Lee, and Dale Bowie. It considers the threats and opportunities that lie ahead for our #redmeatsector, presenting our arguments clearly for all to read. It is timely to launch this when there is so much chatter on the future of our red meat industry. Our point here is that New Zealand is well positioned to grow #beef and #sheep meat better than anyone else, but we have to be better at telling #ourstory, creating a #cultureoffood and getting out into the #market. Working on behalf of a partnership is really powerful when we can share #knowledge and #insights like this. Massey University, Fonterra, The New Zealand Institute for Plant and Food Research Limited, AgResearch, AGMARDT (The Agricultural and Marketing Research and Development Trust), Pierre Venter, Mark Piper, Ray Geor, Ebony Leake, Nick Pyke, Dean Williamson, Bryan Gibson, Jenny Cameron, Dean Fraser, Chris Kerr, Laura Morrison

Today, as Donald J. Trump assumes office, the United States stands at a critical juncture, not only politically but also in the realm of food production, distribution, and consumption. Over the next four years, significant shifts in food policy are on the horizon, encompassing areas such as agricultural practices, GMOs, food assistance programs, and the regulatory functions of the FDA and USDA. At the core of this evolution is an intriguing juxtaposition: Trump's emphasis on deregulation and commercial farming intersecting with the sustainability and public health advocacy championed by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the nominee for Secretary of Health and Human Services. This unique blend of perspectives underscores the intricate nature of America's food landscape, prompting a fundamental query: Will we progress towards a future defined by resilience, fairness, and sustainability, or will we exacerbate existing divides? Regardless of whether you work in farming, food science, marketing, or policy, this juncture holds significance. Food policy impacts us all, influencing not just our meals but also the well-being of our societies and the environment. What part will you play in shaping the path ahead for our food system? #FoodPolicy #Sustainability #PublicHealth #FoodSystems #FutureOfFood

Currently at No. 1 within the Most Read section of RTE Brainstorm!?I wrote a short piece that puts into context the research we completed on Cheddar cheese impacts when reducing milking frequency to once-a-day. The RTE piece is available here: https://lnkd.in/eRVM6-Pi The full research and journal publication is available here: https://lnkd.in/e8F_rtf2 Milking cows once-a-day, rather than the usual twice-a-day, has been associated with improved work-life-balance and wellbeing benefits for farmers, but, does making this change impact key dairy products like cheese in a negative, positive or neutral way??
