In ‘Heartbreak City,’ Shaun Scott Uses Seattle Sports as a Window Into Our City’s Politics and Culture -- full review by Alex Gallo-Brown linked below Sports do not usually bring to mind egalitarianism or social justice. From billionaire team owners to millionaire athletes to fervid, fanatical fans, professional sports often exist at the intersection of toxic masculinity, corporate predation, and capitalist spectacle. There are exceptions (female basketball players’ promotion of LGBTQ rights; some football and male basketball players’ support of Black Lives Matter; college athletes’ recent efforts to unionize), but the rule generally holds. So why has Shaun Scott, activist, author, and former socialist candidate for Seattle City Council, devoted an entire book-length work to the history of Seattle’s sports? /// #ArtsAndCulture #BookReview #HeartbreakCity #ShaunScott #SeattleSports #Seattle #SouthSeattle #SouthEnd

‘Fair Play, Fair Workplace: Addressing Racism and Homophobia in Sport’ An engaging panel discussion at our LinkedIn office on eliminating discrimination in Sport, which I had the pleasure of moderating. As a former athlete and current Non-Executive Director of a sports National Governing Body, I was looking forward to interviewing our panelists. Thank you to our speakers Rebecca Geraghty-Shewan MEng CEng MIMechE MINCOSE, Chris Lambert OLY, Louis Bamgboye and Mark Cadogan ???? for the candid conversation covering: ? What sports organisations can do in addressing some of the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ and Black Athletes working in sport. ? The role media coverage plays in shaping perceptions of homophobia and racism in sport. ? Representation structurally and systemically within sports organisations to drive change and not just on the pitch or track. One big takeaway for me was the impact of football on other sports (directly and indirectly) in attracting, retaining and developing talent due to many factors, which were both a challenge and an opportunity. ?? A shout to our LinkedIn Employee Resource Groups, BIG (Black Inclusion Group) and OUT@IN for this intersectional partnership and especially Aston Brooks-Ashitey and Paul Giafferi in putting this event together ????. #LinkedInLife

Incorporate the opinion of your (potential) fans in your strategy as a football club ? This week, the new expansion team of the NWSL in Boston has launched it's campaign. Fans were not impressed.... to say the least. ?? It started with the name: BOS nation FC. Fans didn't love it at all, the reaction on the internet were mostly negative. People responding things as: "This made it through brand testing??" or "There’s still time to change this". And than on top of that, they launched their announcement video where they kind of missed the point... They later had to publicly apologize to their LGBTQ community for the "too many balls" campaign. God... not a great start for the team. They will probably recover from this as a management, but what can we learn from their mistakes? Here's my opinion: ? Get to know your audience, understand them and involve them. In women's football the LGBTQ community is a very big and loyal community for example. Angel City Football Club is one of the best examples on how to incorporate communities into your strategy and let them be heard. ? Make sure that external parties, such as a creative branding agency, knows what women's football is all about. Educate them, because it's something else than men's football Let's see how it all turns out in the future, I will be following them closely!

As someone passionate about DEI, it’s inspiring to see how the WNBA (Women's National Basketball Association) is shaping this moment for greater women’s equity in sports. Growing up, I was a lukewarm Houston Comets fan—not because of a lack of interest, but because it was hard to even watch the games on TV. Over the years, the WNBA has been positioning itself for this moment, with the most significant investment being in providing better viewer accessibility. Improving player visibility and Storytelling, Content Access, Media Partnerships, and leveraging digital disruption (meeting fans where they are) has been key to overcoming decades of challenges in raising awareness. This movement is also being amplified by aligned support from other sports leagues, Big Tech, and Gen Z. Gen Z, in particular, cares deeply about gender equality. Aside from AI, the top trend I always advise companies to prepare for is the values-driven approach of Gen Z. For anyone who has competed as a woman in sports, this moment is emotional—and rightfully so. From advocating for decent-quality jerseys (Y'all my mama did not PLAY lol) in middle school to witnessing the most-watched women’s sports game in history, we see what happens when women are simply given the chance and similar resources. Shoutout to NY LIBERTY for turning this moment into magic! I'm curious to think how you all think the W can build upon the momentum? #WomenInSports #WNBA #EquityInSports #DEI #DiversityAndInclusion

Racial Equality in Sports: Challenges and Progress In the dynamic world of sports, the pursuit of racial equality remains a critical issue. Despite significant progress over the years, athletes and organizations continue to face challenges in achieving true inclusivity and fairness. Key Challenges: 1. Representation**: Many sports still struggle with racial diversity in leadership positions and coaching roles. 2. Bias and Discrimination: Racial bias and discrimination can impact athletes' opportunities and experiences both on and off the field. 3. Economic Barriers: Access to sports facilities, coaching, and support can be uneven, particularly in marginalized communities. Progress Made: 1. Awareness Campaigns: Increased focus on racial equality through campaigns and initiatives is driving awareness and change. 2. Diversity Initiatives: Many organizations are implementing programs to promote diversity in sports at all levels. 3. Athlete Advocacy: Athletes are using their platforms to address and challenge racial inequalities, influencing change within their sports and beyond. As we celebrate the strides made, it's crucial to remain committed to advancing racial equality in sports. By fostering an inclusive environment, we ensure that talent is nurtured and recognized regardless of race, contributing to a more equitable and representative sports culture. #RacialEquality #SportsDiversity #Inclusion #AthleteAdvocacy #ProgressAndChallenges
