Every community has heroes making a difference, and I want to encourage everyone to take a closer look at the amazing work happening around them. In 2021, my friend Kevin Hodgson, Executive Director of HEROS Hockey, received the prestigious Willie O'Ree Community Hero Award. This award, named after the first Black player in the NHL, celebrates those who use hockey to drive positive change and foster inclusivity. Kevin’s work with HEROS and the creation of SuperHEROS—a program for youth with cognitive and physical challenges—has provided countless young people with opportunities to grow, connect, and thrive through hockey. HEROS has supported over 18,000 youth since 2000, offering free programs that build life skills and confidence. Kevin and the incredible HEROS volunteers prove how impactful sports can be when used as a tool for inclusion and empowerment. The Willie O'Ree Award reminds us that change happens when people step up, lead with kindness, and break down barriers. So, here’s my challenge: take a moment to recognize the unsung heroes in your own community. Who’s making a difference? Who’s creating opportunities? Let’s celebrate them, amplify their work, and find ways to support these initiatives. Together, we can foster stronger, more inclusive communities where everyone has the chance to succeed. #CommunityImpact #Inclusivity #HEROSHockey #WillieOReeAward

The 2024 World Series is set to be a historic event, with the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees facing off in a classic East Coast-West Coast rivalry. However, the game's significance goes beyond just baseball. The game will feature only four African American players, a stark contrast to the 18% of players on all MLB rosters in 1991. The decline in African American representation in baseball is a complex issue, rooted in factors such as the high cost of playing the game, the lack of investment in Black communities, and the absence of Black culture in the sport. Despite the challenges, the four Black American players in the World Series are superstars in their own right, with impressive records and achievements. The lack of diversity in baseball is not only a problem for the sport but also for the broader society. It reflects the ongoing racial disparities in America, and the need for more inclusive and equitable opportunities. What are your thoughts on the issue? How can baseball and other sports address the decline in African American representation?

100 years ago: Negro Leagues hold their first World Series Hilldale lasted nearly three weeks. It was played in four cities. It was a best-of-nine series that went … 10 games. Everything about the first Negro Leagues World Series -- played 100 years ago -- was ambitious, much like the leagues themselves. The showdown between the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro National League and the Darby, Pa.-based Hilldale Club (informally known as the Darby Daisies) of the Eastern Colored League featured five future Hall of Fame players and marked a major milestone in the evolution of the Negro Leagues and their place in baseball society. “It’s a milestone that most baseball fans, I’m going to venture to guess, know very little, if anything, about,” says Negro Leagues Baseball Museum (NLBM) president Bob Kendrick. “That speaks to the value of a Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, because it’s important that we bring this to the forefront and understand the significance.” At the privately funded NLBM, in the historic 18th & Vine jazz district of Kansas City, visitors this year have been treated to a special exhibit honoring the history of the Monarchs, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of them winning the first of what was then known as the “Colored World Series.” For now, the 100th anniversary of the Monarchs’ triumph is good occasion to reflect on an event that attracted interest among baseball fans of all colors, further legitimizing the Negro Leagues at a vital stage in their development #negroleague #worldseries #negroleagueworldseries #mlb #baseball #100thanniversary #sportshistory #kansascitymo https://lnkd.in/eBrp49Q2

People like to compare ratings of men’s and women’s basketball, but I think it’s an apples-to-oranges situation. The fact is that while both leagues are playing basketball, they’re doing so with emphasis on different strengths. The NBA is often dominated by one-on-one play, while the women’s game offers tons of competition, high-level fundamentals, and footwork. There is a lot of strategy and ball movement. And If you think the women can’t hang, think again: NBA and WNBA athletes train together. Kawhi Leonard credits WNBA players for teaching him how to use his pivot foot more effectively, and WNBA teams tap high-level men to train against to perfect their craft. The other thing to watch with the women’s game: it’s evolving, and fast. Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, and others are bringing more talent into the game. The men’s and women’s leagues don’t have to compete. They can be complementary and grow together. #basketball #wnba #innovation #sportsbusiness

?? Leadership in Action! Despite the absence of key National Basketball Association (NBA) and National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) players Damian Lillard and Giannis Antetokounmpo, Bobby Portis exemplified true resilience and determination in a crucial Game 5, scoring 29 points to lead the Milwaukee Bucks Inc. against the Pacers. Known for his fiery spirit and unapologetic defense, Bobby’s performance also came with a powerful demonstration of accountability—having apologized to his team for a previous Game 4 ejection, he returned focused and more determined than ever. This moment serves as a profound lesson for us in business, work, and education: Embrace challenges with the "Next (wo)man up" mentality. In the face of setbacks, it’s our response that defines us. Let’s channel our inner champion, leveraging adversity to fuel our success, showing up for our team when it matters most. ?????? #Leadership #Resilience #Teamwork #Mindset #NoQuit #Mentalhealth #HeartofaChampion #MentalStrength #Sports #Performance #Athletes #NBA
