Today I'd like to talk briefly about candidate experience. And for the avoidance of doubt, I'm defining 'a candidate' as someone who's read about a job opening and have shown interest by responding - usually to a job posting, a message or a series of messages. Until they do that, they're just a reader. And I'm defining 'a reader' as someone who reads what you've written. Which brings me to my point. Does someone who doesn't read your job post but applies anyway, deserve a response? No, they don't. Whether or not you choose to is up to you, depending on how much you believe in (or understand) the broad concept of 'candidate experience'. But my point is they don't deserve the basic courtesy of a response if they haven't afforded you the basic courtesy of reading your job post. The easiest way of knowing someone didn't read your job post is when you get an application to your VP of Sales job from a Waiter, or your Project Manager job gets an application from a Landscape Gardener. I always do respond (I have my own system for doing this) but, as someone who invests quite a lot of time and money into my job ads, it does piss me off. Here’s how I keep my candidate pool fresh. I repost my open jobs every week or two, typically every Sunday night. Why? Because savvy candidates want the first crack at my job. So here’s what they do: They filter their search results by clicking jobs posted in the past week or 24 hours to accomplish this. Additionally, new candidates continuously enter the market. So, if you don’t repost your job, those new job-seekers likely won’t see your stale job posting from a month ago.
