I’ve had the pleasure of working with many entrepreneurs who have sold their businesses and then retire. Too often I hear about their struggles as they didn’t really “plan” for it. A very important article for people who want to avoid experiencing retirement shock and anxiety when they retire. Like Lawrence in the article I experienced retirement shock and it wasn't a lot of fun let me tell you. It lead me to writing three books trying to figure out why it hit me hard while others were able to avoid it and now I'm in a position where I can share what I learned. Here's an interesting read from Harvard Business Review that identifies a possible warning for anyone considering retirement; "It takes work to stop working. Leaving a career and crafting a fulfilling retirement takes thought, time, and effort. The process can be enjoyable, but it cannot be avoided." Unfortunately, still too many people figure that if they have the financial aspects of retirement figured out, then the non financial will just fall into place. But this is not the case. What is "unretirement?" Well, it's not necessarily about _not_ retiring, but it is about re-thinking the whole concept of retirement and updating our expectations, plans, and concept of what the end of our career is going to look like. Rather than the traditional "one day you're on, the next day you're gone" concept, unretirement is a more gradual and more nuanced approach to sustaining our careers in a manageable, flexible, way. It's about continuing to earn an income so that we can continue to save towards eventual retirement, and do so in a way that makes sense, allows us more freedom, but also provides tangible value for our employer - our client(s) if we decide to consult or start a business.
