Creativity and critical thinking are not just fancy skills—they’re essential for solving problems in new ways! While working on my project, I watched Patch Adams and realized how this movie shows us the power of using empathy and thinking differently to make a real difference, both back then and now. ???? In the film, Patch Adams, a medical student, saw that traditional healthcare often lacked compassion. Instead of following the old ways, he used humor and personal connection to make patients feel truly cared for. His story reminds us to question, “What if we looked at this problem differently?” ?? Think about teachers during the pandemic. When classrooms shut down, they didn’t just stop teaching. They reimagined learning using online tools, creating interactive lessons, virtual group activities, and even using everyday items at home for hands-on learning. That’s Design Thinking in action—redefining the problem and finding creative solutions when things seemed impossible! At the dawn of the modern computer age, for example, my son had to choose a major at his university and saw that none of the current subjects and disciplines encompassed what he needed. He created an "ad hoc major," integrating subjects from five different majors. When his ad hoc major was announced at graduation, some laughed. But now all cross-disciplinary lifelong learning resembles creating ad hoc majors. Lifelong learning and cross-disciplinary learning was made imperative by the information and communication revolutions because new subjects, now information, emerged faster than could be contained using prior names and categories. New domains of knowledge interpenetrated one another as they emerged. Names came later. Naming is a fundamental act of creativity, making distinctions that did not previously exist and expanding our thinking like adding colors to a palette."
