??Charleston’s Next Big Step: The Vision for an Innovation District?? Medical University of South Carolina is at the forefront of transforming Charleston into a hub of innovation with the development of an Innovation District that will unite universities, businesses, and innovators to drive economic growth and foster new discoveries. As a foundational step towards this vision, Blue Sky Labs is paving the way with help from Joe Fiore MBA, CAM, who has recently stepped into the role of Director at Blue Sky Labs. Joe, who also serves as Vice President of Operations at the Zucker Institute for Innovation Commercialization, will be balancing both roles, bringing his expertise in operations to drive forward both organizations' missions. In a recent discussion, Dr. David J. Cole, M.D., FACS, President of MUSC, and Dr. Jesse Goodwin, Chief Innovation Officer at MUSC, shared their vision for this ambitious project. In case you missed it, #Wisconsin has been on a bit of an economic development hot streak of late. It started in early May when Microsoft announced it will build a $3.3 billion #data center in Racine County, largely to meet #artificialintelligence needs. The streak grew in late May with creation of a $100-million public-private #venturecapital fund to help finance startups in #healthcare, #agriculture and other sectors – with emphasis on #rural Wisconsin and people who don’t normally encounter early stage investors. It continued this week when Wisconsin was named a “#tech hub,” a process that began with the 2022 passage of the CHIPS and Science Act and which spurred a multi-state competition for federal dollars. The U.S. Economic Development Administration designated 12 such hubs, spread among sectors ranging from quantum computing to polymers to food technologies, with Wisconsin’s focus being #personalizedmedicine. There has been growing interest in the intersection of entrepreneurship and mental health and well-being. As Ute Stephan's 2018 paper on Entrepreneurs' Mental Health and Well-Being: A Review and Research Agenda (https://lnkd.in/gSQTzRWN) suggests, supporting entrepreneurs' resilience and well-being can help them achieve better outcomes with ripple effects for our society and the economy. We now know so much more in the field of neuroscience and there is evidence that entrepreneurs are more likely to be neuroatypical and fall on the spectrum. However, there is even more to be learned and translated into practical application for entrepreneurs and others. To further this field of study, STVP - the Stanford Engineering Entrepreneurship Center together with Stanford Byers Center for Biodesign has launched the Stanford Initiative for Entrepreneurs' Resilience and Well Being (SIER). This is work is a critical part in pursuit of our mission to "empower aspiring entrepreneurs to be global citizens who build and scale responsible innovations." I've been reflecting (beachside;) on the extraordinary #Innovate100 event from a couple months ago, as I believe we have just touched the tip of the iceberg regarding our region's potential for even greater growth. Collaboration between universities and industry is crucial in spurring innovation and developing a skilled and agile workforce capable of meeting the demands of our rapidly evolving economy. Research: Advancements in genomics, biotech, and healthtech are positioning New Jersey as a leader in cutting-edge scientific discoveries. These innovations contribute to our understanding of complex biological systems and pave the way for new treatments and technologies that can improve our lives. Technology and Digital Transformation: These are huge cornerstones of our state's legacy and the region’s future success. The integration of #AI, robotics, and other advanced technologies is revolutionizing the way we do business. Embracing these changes and investing in R&D and digital infrastructure will be key to maintaining our competitive edge in the global market. And thankfully, Gov. The story of Claudie Larouche 's citizen-development efforts is as illustrative as it is disheartening. I've lost count of the number of initially-enthisiastic grassroots initiatives that have fallen prey to the same sad truth: Innovation in government consumes more effort in governance than the innovation itself. There /are/ reasons for this: historically, government tech deployments that are anything less than fully-compliant have been pounced on as examples of "laziness" among public servants. It falls back to the classic good/fast/cheap trinity: public servants are expected to be responsive, faultless, and inexpensive. As in every other domain, you have to pick two. Plans to break ground on a cutting-edge #quantum commercialization center in northwest Indiana are moving forward. Purdue University Northwest officials are aiming for a second-quarter start to bring this transformative center to life in downtown Hammond. “We will have opportunities for researchers and entrepreneurs to work on tech that they might not otherwise have access to on their own,” said #Purdue Northwest Chief Engagement Officer Matt Wells.
