???? The UK has announced a deal with Rolls-Royce to support the Royal Navy’s fleet of nuclear submarines, seen as boosting economic growth and national security. Labour has put growing the UK economy at the forefront of its plans since returning to power in July — but has yet to deliver on its pledge. I want to highlight the alarming implications of the recent meeting between North Korean Foreign Secretary Choe Son-hui and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, where they discussed the war in Ukraine and ongoing tensions on the Korean Peninsula. This collaboration poses significant threats to NATO and the United States. Reports indicate that North Korea is rapidly advancing its missile technology, including intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) capable of reaching the U.S. mainland. Additionally, North Korea reportedly maintains over 1.2 million active military personnel, organized into several key units, including the 4th Missile Division and the 8th Army Corps, both of which focus on missile development and strategic operations. Recent deployments have seen the 3rd Artillery Brigade, equipped with long-range artillery and tactical nuclear capabilities, positioned near the DMZ, while the 12th Special Operations Group has been activated to enhance asymmetric warfare capabilities. The potential exchange of military technology between North Korea and Russia could further enhance these capabilities. Furthermore, the sharing of intelligence and resources raises critical concerns about military readiness and the balance of power in the region. As North Korea continues to bolster its military capabilities, including frequent ballistic missile tests, the risks to regional and global security escalate. It is imperative that the international community remains vigilant and takes decisive action to counter these developments. Strengthening alliances and reinforcing commitments to collective defense are crucial in addressing these emerging threats.

China and Russia lead the hypersonic arms race with operational missiles and hypersonic glide vehicles capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear weapons. The U.S. is rapidly catching up with its adversaries and several hypersonic weapon tests are being carried out by the U.S. Army, Navy, and Air Force. The early procurement of the hypersonic weapon is even more important for the U.S. after North Korea claimed to have tested its own hypersonic missile. With the emerging threats in the region, Japan and South Korea have also paced their hypersonic research programs.

?? Times of Israel [excerpt]: #China sought to cover up the sinking of its newest #nuclear-powered #submarine, according to a senior US defense official. The sinking at a shipyard earlier this year was first reported by The Wall Street Journal, which also says that #satellite imagery later showed large floating cranes arriving to salvage it. “It’s not surprising that the PLA #Navy would try to conceal the fact that their new first-in-class nuclear-powered attack submarine sank pierside,” the senior US defense official says on condition of anonymity, referring to Beijing’s People’s Liberation Army Navy. “In addition to the obvious questions about training standards and equipment quality, the incident raises deeper questions about the PLA’s internal accountability and oversight of China’s #defense industry — which has long been plagued by corruption,” the official adds. The incident is a setback for China, which is seeking to modernize its navy — the largest in the world, but which includes many smaller warships such as frigates and corvettes. The US and Britain are meanwhile working to provide Australia with nuclear-powered submarines — a move that would expand the pool of countries with the advanced undersea vessels. Beijing has been critical of the effort, which also envisages jointly developing advanced warfighting capabilities and is seen as a strategic answer to Chinese military ambitions in the #Pacific region. #news #geopolitics

Exciting developments in the Air Force's Sentinel program as leadership changes have been announced. A significant review highlights the critical importance of adhering to organizational procedures in defense projects. This change reflects the USAF's commitment to maintaining the highest standards in its operations. The Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center Commander removed Col. Charles Clegg from the role as Sentinel Systems Director “due to a loss of confidence in his ability to lead the directorate. He was removed because he did not follow organizational procedures.” For those interested in defense and aerospace, understanding these shifts is key to grasping how strategic decisions impact program success and national security. https://lnkd.in/gPPSA73s #USAF #DefenseIndustry #Leadership #AerospaceEngineering #NationalSecurity

Until recently, neither China’s submarines – nor its anti-submarine warfare (ASW) systems – appeared especially capable. But mindful of the threat posed by American submarines, the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) is beefing up its sub-killing systems. #submarine #navalsystems #navy #naval #china #russia #warfare #geopolitical #dod #taiwan #japan #australia
