Rotarians Bobbie Knight, Miles College President, and Josh Carpenter, Southern Research President & CEO, were quoted in a Birmingham Business Journal article highlighting the college's new innovation incubator and accelerator, which aims to support the innovation ecosystem of Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Historically Black Community Colleges. One of the fun things I get to do is to bounce around the country visiting leaders of various kinds of nonprofit institutions (under the guise of "checking in with our clients"). This week, one of those institutions was a new and particularly exciting one: Ralston College in Savannah, Georgia, led by Dr. Stephen Blackwood. I met President Blackwood in a building facing lovely Forsyth Park, just one of the beautiful old structures the school is inhabiting, or readying to inhabit, as it prepares for significant growth. It's true that not every organization has--or needs to have--a big vision. But Ralston has a massive vision. And it has a leader in Blackwood who, when he shares that vision, comes off as totally believable. His goal is to "revive and reinvent the traditional university." In contradistinction to most mainstream universities today, where the implicit motto seems to be "to think is to make yourself unsafe," Ralston's motto is "to think is to be free." Sounds like just what we need. While a number of wonderful Christian colleges have been founded along these lines over the past several decades, almost no non-faith-based colleges with Ralston's perspective have come into being of late. Right now, Ralston's lone degree program is a one-year M.A. in the humanities. (You can get a taste of what Ralston offers by checking out its online lectures and podcast.) The M.A. program starts with a crash course in Greek--in Greece. Students return to Savannah to finish out the academic year. When Blackwood and I popped in one of the school's lovely buildings, a group of students were practicing for their performance of A Comedy of Errors later in the week. An undergraduate program is in the offing. With the location in Savannah, and with the influential Jordan Peterson in place as chancellor (I guess I buried the lede), it's hard to see how Ralston won't be a smashing success. #Nonprofit #EducationLeadership #AcademicExcellence

Bluffton University was one of only a handful of Mennonite/Brethren universities when I was working at Eastern Mennonite University. Sounds like there will be one less after this year. "With the unanimous support of our respective Boards of Trustees, The University of Findlay and Bluffton University have entered an agreement to pursue a merger of Bluffton University operations with University of Findlay. Findlay and Bluffton would become one higher education community on two campuses, pending all regulatory approvals,. This decision signals a bold vision for our shared future. University of Findlay and Bluffton University share similar roots as institutions founded in Christian faith and are welcoming to all. Both institutions believe in cultivating communities of respect. Through this merger, University of Findlay and Bluffton University would be positioned to increase educational opportunities that prepare our current and future students to lead and serve in their local communities and beyond. Our students and employees would benefit from access to expanded resources on both campuses located 20 miles apart in Northwest Ohio. This is a transformational moment for both Findlay and Bluffton. We are confident that our strong roots and enduring values will ground us in the face of change. Career Technical Education (CTE) offers a strong academic and technical education to prepare students for both college and career. Heights Career Tech Consortium offers courses through a four-district consortium, which includes Cleveland Heights, Maple Heights, Shaker Heights, and Warrensville Heights High Schools. The programs take place over two years for 11th and 12th grade students. ECEC is proud to expand our relationship with Shaker Heights, and again welcome this school partner as part of the team.
