Reflecting on my first few weeks at CubeSmart has been an incredible journey, marked by 6 invaluable lessons and newfound gratitude: 1. The initial phase felt like a "Welcome Whirlwind ??," navigating through a sea of new processes and faces. However, embracing the exhaustion and arming myself with meticulous note-taking proved essential, reminding me that genuine curiosity and questions are powerful allies. 2. Balancing observation with proactive problem-solving emerged as a crucial lesson??. While absorbing the current state is vital, there's a unique power in offering solutions, fostering trust, and catalyzing collaboration, even as a newcomer. 3. Networking took on a transformative meaning, shifting from company-centric to a personal commitment. Thanks to insightful advice from many at Tell 2 Friends, my approach evolved, leading to continued enriching connections and introduction calls. 4. Embracing every learning opportunity, particularly in this initial phase, became a cornerstone of my journey ??. From comprehensive training classes to executive-led store visits, each experience added layers to my skill set, and I'm genuinely grateful for the chance to explore various facets of the company on such an intimate level. 5. I rediscovered that relationships matter profoundly ??. Despite my natural inclination to focus on tasks, understanding the business through the lens of others proved indispensable and an ongoing task. Special thanks to my guide and teammate, Julia Washington, SHRM-CP, for being a tremendous source of knowledge, support, feedback and encouraging a slower pace. 6. Recognizing the impact of culture and skills fit on mental health was a realization I didn't expect. Navigating finding a new career felt daunting, but the time spent evaluating my aspirations led me to a position that beautifully blends technical skills and soft skill development. The prevailing "Remove Barriers to Yes" attitude and the emphasis on collaboration have created a work environment where confidence flourishes. It also may have accidentally created a HRIS team moto of "Anything is Possible ??". ?? Let’s Go! ?? The response so far has been incredible to our open roles in Walmart ‘s GSOC and it’s only been a few days! As expected, there are lots of you with questions that are asking for time to explore further. While I really appreciate the questions, I don’t have enough time to get back to everyone - so……here’s what I’m going to do. For those that have applied, I am going to hold two webinars next week to cover our growth, the roles, and answer any questions. Don't Hire for Experience. Hire for Someone Who Can Cook Up Solutions. ?? Cooking and working aren’t as different as you think. The secret ingredient to success? It’s not just about skills. In both the kitchen and the office, it comes down to these 5 characteristics: ?? Preparation: Just like a chef sets up their ingredients before cooking, successful people plan before they start a task. No plan = chaos. ?? Adaptability: A missing ingredient or a last-minute deadline change? Both require quick thinking and the ability to adjust. ?? Attention to Detail: In cooking, a small mistake can ruin a dish. Sometimes I walk around my house and look at all the name brands staring back at me….and I think, “Oh, I wonder if they’re hiring?” Here’s one…Kroger…they have a bunch of owned brands: Ralphs, Dillons, Smith’s, King Soopers, Fry’s, QFC, City Market, Owen’s, Jay C, Pay Less, Baker’s, Gerbes, Harris Teeter, Pick ‘n Save, Metro Market, Mariano’s, Fred Meyer, Dillons Marketplace, Fry’s Marketplace, King Soopers Marketplace, Smith’s Marketplace, Food 4 Less, Foods Co. Their career site has almost 20,000 roles posted. About 2% of those are white-collar, corporate roles. There is not a shortage of jobs in America. Happy Valentine’s Day everyone! My wife Sara and I celebrated at Waffle House! It’s a fun, stress-free and unique Valentine’s Day outing. (For those curious, you do have to make a reservation around 2 weeks to a month before and it’s decorated for the day.) This time got me thinking. As someone who was a hiring manager for a number of years and a recruiter for three, it’s hard not to be assessing people for potential positions. Too often I see hiring managers pass on candidates because they don’t quite align with their industry or have the exact background. I’m not saying you have to completely ignore those aspects but I do think there needs to be more consideration for skill set. Tonight at Waffle House I saw the following skills on display: top notch customer service, amazing collaboration and team work, project management (how they keep those orders straight I will never know!) and smart revenue generation (we were in and out in about 30 minutes).
