research indicates that suspended pavements utilizing load bearing modules like #silvacell out perform all types of structural soils. How do you value the better system? how do you accurately compare structural soils and suspended pavements?

Great to see Mowi Scotland having success with our Smirfeeder waterborne feeding system! ?? The video below showcases the system together with a new and innovative water spinner system at Mowi’s Loch Duich site, located on the western coast of Scotland. Loch Duich is one of two Mowi sites in the UK that currently have our Smirfeeder installed. The Smirfeeder systems are designed to help Mowi Scotland achieve more sustainable and energy-efficient feeding practices for their organic salmon ??
Water in your feed spinners is usually a very bad sign. Here on Mowi Scotland’s Loch Duich site however, it would be worrisome not to see fountains spirting from every pen. Gavin, an engineer with Mowi, and in collaboration with Smir Group, is developing a first-of-its-kind water spinner system that promises to catapult feeding to new heights regarding efficiency and longevity. This system can even feed all twelve pens simultaneously, a feat often out of reach for most farm sites. James spent the day with Iman Ismail and his team at Loch Duich, where they discussed all things feed spinners. ??

We paused our sales experiment on the lake yesterday. We spent the past week communicating to our customers about the upcoming pause, and interestingly, our regulars understood why we were doing it and were ok with it, even if it means they need to source their produce from somewhere else for the time being. Why did we pause something that seemed to be working well, you ask? The reality of transitioning seasons was upon us. Seeds or saplings are planted, they grow and some time 45 days or so after planting, we start seeing the results of our efforts. They bear fruits and vegetables for some time and then they reach end of life, and must be replaced with new plants. This also typically matches with a change in season - in our case, from summer to monsoon. We had to remove our plants (mostly turn them over into the soil, so their nutrients are retained in the ecosystem), prep the fields by adding compost and other nutrients and remake the beds and sow new seeds / saplings. This could have been managed better - we could have had a phased transition where some farms were transitioned earlier and some later to ensure our produce did not stop. But, it required better planning, a diversified farm base and a lot of luck (we struggled for water in some of the farms at the peak of summer, which is when we would have had to sow new plants). Now, solving this problem using science, technology, planning & management is exactly why we started on this journey - but we do have miles to go before we get there ?? We did, however, increase our acreage this sowing season by 30%, bought a tractor of our own and achieved significantly better efficiencies SoS (Season on Season) in field preparation and sowing by some interesting and frugal engineering by Saurabh S.'s team - more on that in subsequent posts.
Our tractor starts work at the new farm, with a feathered welcome committee. Connect with us to learn more about our work and visit our farms. ??

There’s more than one layer to embracing #Agrivoltaics within the landscape fabric of our communities. Solar farms may not be as impactful as Solar ON farms and family owned land. When it comes to how much, where and enviromental impact down to the simplest terms of pollinator habitats it worth the consideration to look at solar through a different lense. There’s more than one way to look at solar. #cleanenergy #AgriVoltaics #thinkglobalactlocal
James Madison University is the first university to earn Virginia PollinatorSmart certification for their pollinator-friendly solar field! We celebrated this accomplishment this week with the PollinatorSmart team that is made up of 3 state agencies (Virginia Department of Environmental Quality + Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources + DCR), 2 universities (JMU + William & Mary) and 1 nonprofit (Flora of Virginia). Planting native plants under and around solar arrays has ecological benefits (explained by Steve Living, DWR habitat education coordinator) and economic benefits. Squirrels ??? are incredibly important in shaping forest ecosystems and regeneration through their caching behavior, which helps spread tree species and promotes diversity. In fact, a study from the University of Richmond found that squirrels forget up to 74% of their hidden caches, which enables new trees to grow. ???? So, let's recognize the impact of these small but mighty creatures! ??? ?? #WildlifeManagement #EnvironmentalConservation #Sustainability #EcosystemHeroes #SquirrelAppreciation
This week is the 6th annual Great Scottish Squirrel Survey and we’re asking everybody to get outside and explore nature, keep a close eye out, and submit all sightings of grey and red squirrels on our website. This will help us create a week-long snapshot of squirrel distributions across the country, vital for the red squirrel conservation our staff carry out on the ground. Last year over 1300 people reported almost 2000 squirrel sightings in just one week. Let’s make this years’ survey even greater. Thank you! ??

One of the most satisfying skills I developed through the UW Wetland Science and Management Program was the ability to identify plants and plant communities. As a means of practice I've started surveying plants in local parks, and occasionally they offer up surprising specimens. For example, Solstice Park in West Seattle, a small park with slope wetland elements, supports narrow leaf willow (Salix exigua) - the only such example of this plant I've yet to observe this side of the Cascades! In total, Solstice park has examples of more than 40 plants we learned as part of the program.
