An interesting day of discussion yesterday at AJ Retrofit 2024. Highlights included a presentation of David Chipperfield’s LSE Firoz Lalji Global Hub, where it was great to see one of the profession’s big hitters pushing their new approach to reuse, moving beyond heritage and conservation concerns to protecting buildings for their ‘material quality and physical capital’ – of course a very normal part of contextual design, but something of a conundrum for the planning framework, we were told. But the result was good: As Chipperfield himself said: 'Retrofit is not only the right thing to do, it's the more interesting thing to do'. ? Momentum for retrofit seems to be growing … Gort Scott’s Retrofit Manifesto, launched at the London Festival of Architecture, looks increasingly pertinent … https://lnkd.in/d2VcJWGi

Award-winning projects Bukit Canberra, SAFRA Choa Chu Kang Clubhouse and The Greenhouse at Dulwich College (Singapore) are unveiled as winners of the Green Good Design Sustainability Awards 2024. Organised by The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies and The Chicago Athenaeum Museum for Architecture and Design, the award celebrates #futurethinking projects that inspire progress towards a #sustainable built environment. Harnessing DP’s #multidisciplinary capabilities, the three projects are a showcase of the practice’s expertise in delivering projects that achieve #betterthansustainable outcomes under its #GreenWellTech thrust. Fluctuations with Growth: The proposed number of stories fluctuated, with notable peaks in Q2 2022 (4,938) and Q1 2024 (8,412). The overall trend indicates growth. This Portfolio showcases my undergraduate architecture journey of Residential to commercial design project

From the start of my architecture gig in 2001 (!), I went in with the belief that individual buildings tell larger stories about their cities and regions. Here, in one of my last pieces as the San Francisco Chronicle urban design critic, I use 11 structures to look at how 21st Century S.F. has changed, and some of the underlying forces at work (seismic protection, for example, and the need for affordable housing).
