Our first episode of 2024 is a great example of good practice from Francis Burrows of Orbit Group - give us a listen!
For our first episode of Equality in Housing in 2024, we have a conversation with Francis Burrows, Director of Support and Service Development for Orbit Group. Francis talks about the work the organisation does to engage with their tenants, particularly underrepresented groups, and how that work informs their policies and processes in how they support them. https://lnkd.in/dvrpww5u UK Collaborative Centre for Housing Evidence

Today, we observe Red Shawl Day, a time to honor the lives of Native American women, girls, and all Indigenous people impacted by violence. This day is especially significant in raising awareness about the crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) and the broader issue of Missing and Murdered Indigenous People (MMIP), which includes men, boys, and two-spirit individuals. The red shawl is a powerful symbol of protection, strength, and visibility. It reminds us of the urgent need for action to address the systemic inequities and violence disproportionately affecting Indigenous communities. Indigenous women face homicide rates more than 10 times the national average in some areas. Native people are also at heightened risk of human trafficking and other forms of violence. The MMIW and MMIP crisis is deeply tied to historical injustices, lack of resources, and systemic neglect. How you can help: Educate Yourself: Learn about the history and ongoing impacts of this issue. Visit the National Indigenous Women’s Resource Center (NIWRC): niwrc.org Explore resources from the MMIW USA Organization: mmiwusa.org Show Support: Wear red to honor those affected and start conversations about this important topic. Advocate: Support legislation and initiatives aimed at improving justice and safety for Indigenous communities. By raising awareness and taking meaningful action, we can work toward justice, healing, and change. Together, we can make a difference. #RedShawlDay #MMIW #MMIP #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth

In this post, we unpack how existing inequalities are magnified by conflict, as infrastructure and social relations are weakened – 2/8 in our VAWG in Conflict series. Conflict and displacement often leave women and girls, LGBTQIA+ people, people with disabilities, and other marginalised populations at a higher risk of trafficking, human rights abuses, intimate partner violence, forced and child marriage, and limited access to essential services. But there is also an opportunity for transformation. Groups and individuals who have been marginalised and oppressed are not merely victims and recipients of aid. They are resilient agents of change. They know first-hand what their communities need. When they are included in, and lead, decision-making and reconstruction efforts we can build back better – in a way that does not reinforce unequal systems and structures but dismantles them. A feminist future of peace is possible. At EQI, we work every day to dismantle existing inequalities. And so can you in your own spheres of?influence. Our liberation is interconnected, necessary and possible. It will take all of us.? Swipe right to learn more. Emma Fulu (she/her)

Today, the House is voting on a bill (HR 9495) that would empower the Trump administration to crackdown on nonprofits. While HR 9495 will fail in the Senate, supporters will likely re-introduce this bill when Republicans have a trifecta next year. Opponents to social justice philanthropy and progressive nonprofits will weaponize disinformation about "terrorism" and "funding terrorism" as the basis to revoke tax-exempt status from nonprofits. As usual, Palestine solidarity is the canary in the coal mine. Labor unions weren't ready in 2011 for the assault on public sector collective bargaining or the wave of right-to-work laws. I hope the nonprofit sector gets ready for the existential threats to civil society in 2025. Read more in the ACLU's letter to Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and then contact your reps:
