Today marks the start of Hispanic Heritage Month! The theme for 2024 is “Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together.”

??Afro-Latinos are often underrepresented.?? Not just during Hispanic Heritage Month but every month. We are a vital part of the Latino story. Our stories matter and should be?seen, heard, and celebrated. Growing up, I was disconnected from my cultural roots. My family is from the Dominican Republic and Jamaica, but I grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, often feeling neither Black enough nor Latino enough. We focused more on achieving the "American Dream" than keeping cultural traditions alive. I remember being laughed at for not speaking Spanish—because how could a "Garcia" not know the language? People told me I was "trying to be something I wasn’t," but the truth is,?I was just trying to be who I was. The shame of not knowing enough about my heritage followed me into adulthood, making me feel small and hesitant to express myself. It wasn't until I actively began reconnecting with my roots and embracing every part of my story that things began to change. The more I learned, the more my confidence grew, and the more I understood how much my diverse heritage enriched my life. Now,?my mission is to help others do the same—to reclaim their cultural heritage, celebrate their unique identity, and find pride in who they are. That's why I'm so excited to launch my book,?Rediscovering Your Roots, on?October 10th during Hispanic Heritage Month. This book is not just my story— it’s a foundational guide and an inspiring starting point for anyone wanting to reconnect with their roots, understand their identity, and live it fully. This is a time?for recognizing the contributions and influence of?Hispanic Americans?to the history, culture, and achievements of the United States. September 15- October 15 represents the time frame which Hispanic countries gained independence. The countries include Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and El Salvador. Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to celebrate the culture through education, music, dance, folklore, arts, and food. Many school, church, and organization events are held to honor the Hispanic culture during Hispanic Heritage Month.
