Today's post is going to be an unconventional one. I'm breaking away from the traditional LinkedIn post to share a personal reflection on the impact of volunteer work. It's time to practice what I've always preached - making our profiles more personal. Let's rewind to when I was 8, attending a summer camp with kids who had physical disabilities. This experience was an eye-opener; the stark contrast in our treatment was undeniable. Witnessing them being treated like outsiders made me feel something that I couldn't really name. Fast forward to 15, when a visit to an old age home left a mark on my soul. This time, I knew what I was feeling and knew that I wanted to do something- what? how? when? where? I didn't know. Life took its course, and the importance of social work faded into the background. The pandemic served as a reminder for the promise I had made to myself years ago. I was older, a tad bit wiser, and knew what I wanted to do to give back to the community.?In the midst of chaos, emerged a rekindled passion for volunteering. Now, I've committed a fixed amount of time from my week to educate disabled kids. This entire experience has been a humbling one, reinforcing the belief that volunteer work, if introduced early in life, can shape empathetic, compassionate individuals. It bridges gaps, breaks stereotypes, and cultivates a sense of community. My challenge to you: reflect on your own journey and consider how volunteerism has shaped your perspective. Let's not just talk about making a difference; let's actively contribute to the positive change we wish to see in the world. #VolunteerImpact #CommunityEngagement #MakeADifference

Why volunteer for ABLE2's Matching Program? Because people need people! We recognize the importance of friends and networks in our lives. Every day, we see evidence of how personal relationships and networks help support and resolve personal and professional matters. We use our networks to help others – whether it’s related to getting a job, finding a professional resource or for social and recreational purposes. We rely on these rich personal networks and relationships. Many people with disabilities don’t have the benefit of these relationships. By becoming a volunteer or an "Ally" for a person with disability, or "Friend", you help reduce their loneliness and isolation, achieve hopes and dreams, develop personal networks and relationships. They may also be able to contribute to their community, be less vulnerable, and have increased self-confidence, mental and physical health. Interested in volunteering? ??This is Caroline?? Caroline’s story demonstrates the value of volunteering to oneself and the community. Living with disability, for her, it is all about helping others. Volunteering helps her to “contribute to the community, develop new skills and knowledge, and make friends.” She has worked in many different roles, including providing advice to organisations and contributing to a paper on disability and inclusion. Caroline suggests organisations talk openly with the person with disability. “Ask them what they would like to do for the organisation and how the organisation can help them. “Be flexible. Make the role suitable for the person’s ability rather than expecting the person to suit the role.” For example, someone with hearing loss, instead of answering phones, they might be great with emails. The benefits to the organisation are many, in Caroline’s opinion. People with disability “are available, some people are not in paid employment, and they have skills and they want to work. The organisation might learn from the person, what their disability is like, what the person has to go through.” Caroline says she loves volunteering. “Volunteering will always be an important part of my life. I love it. I help people and, in turn, they help me.” ?Caroline’s story is part of our disability awareness campaign. In my book, "The Power of Community Connectedness," I showcase many of our community's organizations and individuals who are passionate about serving those on a disability journey. Trying to figure out everything on our own and googling for answers to our questions doesn't work well, if at all. Talking to a real human being - truly connecting - knowing we are being heard and understood - is what is powerful and life changing. The book features local people, but is meant to be used by other communities who long to duplicate similar services. Maybe you, or someone in your community, want to start a nonprofit coffee shop, similar to Kenzie's Be Cafe. Or look into housing for individuals with disabilities GRACIOUS GROUNDS INC. Maybe they need help with Special Needs Planning Jeff Light, ChSNC?. You probably know of caregivers who would benefit from talking with Jessica Ronne (Coffeewithcaregivers). There are people who would love to talk with you and partner with you on your journey. Reach out. I love how the book's contributors share ideas, resources, and time with one another, furthering the reach and strength of their impact. Other communities can easily adopt the same practices. We are stronger together. #disability #disabilityresources #community #impact https://a.co/d/8LtBzY6
