His thinking was that if there was another major source of carbs then it would put less pressure on wheat supplies, bringing down the general price of food. A noble cause, however, the people of the time were not having it. They thought a potato looked and tasted disgusting. He tried to make it compulsory to eat but the peasantry couldn’t even get their dogs to eat them. So he thought of a different plan. He would rebrand the potato. He declared the potato a royal vegetable and would only allow the royal family to eat it. He even assigned guards to protect the royal potato patch. The peasants knew that if something was worth guarding it was worth stealing and in no time there was a massive underground potato growing operation and it completely took off.
