This afternoon MidCoast Council adopted the next two strategies in our #parks and #recreation #planning Portfolio. Today's adopted strategies are the: MidCoast Outdoor Sports Court Strategy, and the MidCoast Sports Lighting Plan. That brings us up to five strategies (and plans) that we have adopted over the last 14 months. From a council that had no parks and recreation planning documents since 2017, when it was amalgamated, to now having what would be considered to be a "full suite" of parks planning documents it is a pleasing result. Today's adopted strategies join: MidCoast Open Space and Recreation Strategy 2023 - 2035 MidCoast Playspace Strategy 2023 - 2035 MidCoast Skatepark Strategy 2023 - 2035 Across the five strategies there are more than 600 individual actions that will guide us in our work for the next 12 years and beyond. These two strategies will be uploaded to the Parks and Recreation Collection (PaRC)'s website to join the others. We are now developing the next three strategies: MidCoast Boating Infrastructure Plan, MidCoast Walking and Cycling Strategy and the MidCoast Public Toilet Strategy. We have also developed our new Commercial Fitness Trainer Policy. A lot of work and massaging all the strategies through the local government approvals process. How do you measure successful placemaking? Several people sent me this image that was circulating on social media as I love both Daybreak and Brigham Young University, my alma mater. (Yes, also very pleased with the victory - offensive holding penalties should always be called - especially on 4th down at the end of a game!) I also love this picture on a professional level for the concept it teaches. As community developers, we create the physical infrastructure of a place, but it’s the social activation by people that make it great. A few of the many other examples I see in our Daybreak Community: - High school dance and family pictures on the beautiful shore of of our lake or out in the community - Kids walking and biking on their own to neighborhood schools, parks, pools, and the lake - Families out for a bike ride on our 50+ miles of paved and dirt biking trails, including the Spoke - our cycle course/pump track/jump course marvel - Paddle boarding on our incredible Water Course - Our LiveDAYBREAK activities and concert series I can’t wait for the opening of Downtown Daybreak next year. We are building a great physical place for Salt Lake Bees baseball, concerts, Larry H. Miller Megaplex Theatres, dining, the arts, ice skating, and more! But, it’s the people that will come activate it that will make it special. Successful placemaking is not just a beautiful physical development, but the social development from the people enjoying it and making it their own. ?? We are pleased to share with you a recently published study about swimmers in the rivers! Returning to the river: the salutogenic model as a theory to explore the relation between outdoor activities and health By Mikael Quennerstedt, Erik Backman & Jonas Mikaels An ongoing discussion is a debate about the benefits of outdoor activities for health, where a narrowness regarding the benefits as a matter of curing or preventing disease has been questioned. Hence, there is an urgent need to theorize further the relationship between outdoor activities and health with robust theoretical frameworks that can guide research and practice, taking different aspects of human-nature relations into account. In the paper, a critique of pathogenic perspectives of health is forwarded, as well as a critique of an anthropocentric human centeredness of health. Instead, a salutogenic model and the metaphor of the swimmer in the river is used to discuss the relation without being restricted to health as the absence of disease or to human health and wellbeing. In the paper, seven different relations, or salutogenic questions, are provided, moving from the swimmer in the foreground, to swimmers in the river to finally foregrounding the river.
