Back in my second home (my car) for the drive up to the Wilkie factory in Kirriemuir, just north of Dundee. I was just thinking how I’ve been very lucky to have customers that have worked with me for many years. In several cases, they’ve moved with me when I’ve changed company multiple times. I’m always impressed with the leap of faith customers take when they do this. It’s hugely rewarding for me - knowing that I must be doing something right! More so, they often say things like “we know we can trust you” or “we’ve never worked with this company before, but now you’re there it’s different”. Being a salesman, words like trust don’t come that easy. I’m so grateful for those customers who’ve done this over the years. They know full well that I don’t always have all the answers, but they also know that I won’t just say anything to get the sale. I’ll go away and work hard behind the scenes to find out. Halloween and no better time to reflect on some of the horrors that sales and business development professionals encounter every day. Here are some of my favourite Halloween themed challenges I have encountered during my career: ??Ghosts - customer names and accounts where the customer has “moved on” but they remain on the system ??♀?Zombies - the opportunities/ deals which are dead but have been reanimated by sales teams who are nervous their pipeline will look insufficient if they admit the deal is dead ??Frankenstein deals - those deals where you try desperately to stitch together different parts of your business but it doesn’t quite work ??♀?Vampires - those customers or deals which continually feed on your time and energy but vanish in the cold light of actually signing a deal What is your worst sales nightmare? #bellrock #fm #energy #carbon #halloween

Flashback to the summer after high school—small-town Tennessee. Selling vacuum cleaners door-to-door. I had completed a number of demonstrations with no sales, each one filled with foibles and mishaps. My Speech and Drama teacher, who truly understood me during a time when I often felt misunderstood, graciously invited me to demonstrate in her beautiful Southern Colonial home. I was showcasing the carpet cleaning element of the vacuum when disaster struck. She ran to get towels as I tried to keep soap bubbles from landing on her antique settee. In the process, I ended up ruining a gorgeous antique rug. I was extremely apologetic and quite discouraged. In her beautiful, southern drawl, she said, "I'm not worried about that old rug, and I'm not worried about you! You are going to succeed in life, just maybe not as a vacuum cleaner salesperson!" We laughed together, as I packed up my equipment for the final time. Although selling vacuum cleaners wasn’t the right path for me, my teacher’s belief in my abilities inspired me to persevere, explore new opportunities, and, as challenging as it can be at times, to view myself through a lens of compassion. Decades later, I still draw on those lessons. These days, I'm comfortable and confident making cold calls because every 'no' brings me closer to a 'yes,' and every challenge presents a valuable opportunity for growth. It's time to fly high and zoom in on what is already familiar! If you need to increase your sales, don't fall into the trap that you need to meet more people. Lord knows that the last thing I want to do is to stand for 60 seconds after 30 other professionals; stating my name, company name, and tagline. That is not the highest and best use of my time. My best referrals come after I do a 30-minute meeting with someone who already knew my name and 'thought' they knew what I did! (but they didn't know my story) It is likely that your key to success is to purposefully invest in the relationships you already have established.
