Congratulations to RPPL network organizations LessonLoop, Teaching Lab, and M-Powering Teachers on their selection for the 2023-24 Tools Competition, the world's largest edtech competition! 50 winners were awarded funding from over 1,900 submissions worldwide, with an emphasis on tools targeting critical issues in education while advancing the field of learning engineering. The winners from our network are advancing ways to enhance teaching using technology and improve student learning: LessonLoop is developing a platform that translates student voice on their learning experience into instant, actionable data and personalized instructional recommendations for educators in grades 3-12 to create more engaging and effective class lessons. M Powering Teachers (MPT) will use natural language processing to analyze recordings of mathematics teaching for information on student mathematical reasoning, teacher-student mathematical language, and equity-centered classroom practices. Teaching Lab will develop an open source benchmark dataset made up of images of handwritten student math work, with the goal of improving the ability of multi-modal Large Language Models (LLMs) to understand and interact with handwritten student work. Inaburra recently hosted the Google for Education Summit, equipping teachers with practical tools for the classroom. I was excited about the AI focus, aiming to work smarter. The conference was well-organised, starting with a keynote by Kimberley Hall that left me feeling motivated. It was the boost I needed, with new ideas for streamlining my workload and processes. ???????? ?????? ?????? ???????? ???????????????? ???? ???????? ?????? ?????????????? ?????????? ?????? ???????????? ???????????????? ????????????? Notebook LM was a standout. It lets you plug in sources, like PDFs, and use AI to analyse and compare them. I tried it with Year 8 History on First Fleet contacts, and it created study guides, comprehension questions, and an answer key based on the content. Notebook LM can also turn sources into interactive conversations or audio for review. It also has a feature to upload multiple sources without altering the content, allowing users to ask questions for pinpointed answers from the text. This could be useful for staff to streamline information from standard operating procedures. ???????? ?????????? ?????????? ?????????? ??????’???? ?????????? ?????????? ???? ???????? ????????????????? Yes, I learned about Diffit, which generates sources at different reading levels with activities and citations. It’s useful for differentiating instruction across varying student abilities. Another tool, Read&Write for Google Chrome, is helpful for students with dyslexia. It lets them focus on smaller text portions, change screen colours, and converts speech to text, providing accessibility in reading and writing. ?????? ?????? ???????????? ?????????????? ?????? ?????? ???????????????????? ???? ?????? ?????????????? ???????????? ???????????????????? ?????? ????????????????????????????? There’s a common fear that AI might replace teachers, but I don’t believe it will. While AI is a fantastic tool, it lacks the personal touch teachers bring. AI can’t replace the ethical, responsible use of knowledge and the nuanced guidance we provide to students. It’s important to integrate AI into learning to prepare students for responsible use rather than avoid it. ???????? ???????????? ?????????????????? ???? ???????????????? ?????????? ???? ?????????????????? ???????? ???? ??????’??? The personal touch. At Inaburra, we value every individual and work to know and support each student. AI can offer data-driven insights but lacks the empathy and character-building essential in education. Our goal is to help students become well-rounded individuals, and AI can’t replicate those human qualities of compassion, kindness, and character.

The "one-size-fits-all" solution for education is clearly not so effective. "Traditional pedagogical methods typically entail one teacher instructing an average of 30 learners. It’s a system that can easily overlook the needs of some students. Although the model has served many students well, a significant number of learners require a more personalized approach." "Embracing the augmentation of AI in schools will bring an array of tools into our educational system and seamlessly connect teaching methods with students’ optimal learning styles." "Teachers will be able to spend their time not only helping all their students understand what they are studying but also helping them to cultivate a love for learning." As an advocate for responsible AI integration, I argue that to truly leverage the power of AI in education, we must first equip educators with the foundational knowledge and understanding necessary to make informed decisions. The promise of AI in education is immense, offering personalized learning, real-time feedback, and adaptive curricula to cater to diverse learning styles. However, the rapid emergence of AI tools, such as Magic School and Diffit, has created an environment where educators may feel pressured to adopt these technologies without a clear understanding of their pedagogical value. To ensure the successful integration of AI in education, professional development initiatives must shift their focus from tool-specific training to fostering a comprehensive understanding of AI and its role in enhancing teaching and learning. This can be achieved through a multidimensional approach, including the following aspects: 1. Theoretical foundations: Provide educators with a strong theoretical understanding of AI, its underlying principles, and its potential applications in education. This knowledge will enable teachers to discern which AI tools align with their instructional goals and support their students' needs. 2. Pedagogical implications: Explore the pedagogical implications of AI integration, including its impact on student learning, assessment practices, and classroom dynamics. By examining AI through a pedagogical lens, educators can develop a critical perspective on the role of AI in their teaching practice. 3. Ethical considerations: Foster awareness of the ethical issues surrounding AI in education, such as privacy, bias, and equity. Encourage educators to engage in thoughtful discussions about the responsible use of AI tools and the importance of protecting students' rights and well-being. 4. Collaborative learning communities: Establish collaborative learning communities where educators can share their experiences, challenges, and successes with AI integration. As Apple Distinguished Schools the RGS Worcester Family of Schools are evaluating Apple's recent AI announcement with interest... With the forthcoming release of iOS 18, generative hashtag #AI features, dubbed Apple Intelligence, will be integrated into Apple's products (with a little help from OpenAI). The features include proofreading & rewriting documents, generating images, transcribing voice memos, summarising emails & lectures, automated film production & problem solving in maths. While these advancements offer possibilities to augment learning & teaching, they will also present a variety of challenges... ? Benefits Apple Intelligence will significantly enhance some of Apple's learning tools. The AI writing assistant & the new calculator app are particularly noteworthy. For example, the AI writing assistant could offer instant feedback on grammar & style, helping students improve their writing skills in real-time. Furthermore, the calculator app could guide students through complex maths problems with tailored hints & explanations, providing a more individualised educational experience. AI movie generation will mean students could demonstrate knowledge & understanding via AI produced films, whilst transcribing voice memos could be a real bonus in lessons & lectures as students could easily record & summarise teaching. The transcriptions could then be turned into quizzes or flashcards using tools like Quizizz or Quizlet. ?? Challenges There are legitimate concerns about the potential misuse of AI tools for cheating on assignments. Research suggests (Freeman, 2024) that while student cheating has not significantly increased with the rise of AI tools, it remains problematic. Teachers may also be reluctant for students to record their lessons, especially given concerns over deepfakes & privacy. Additionally, increased screen time is a risk, potentially affecting students' well-being. Another problematic challenge is accessibility, as these AI features are only available on the newest Apple products, limiting immediate access for many schools and students. ?? Preparing for the Future The introduction of Apple's AI features highlights the importance of our AI literacy programme for teachers, students, parents & the wider community. Our teaching approach will need to evolve to balance the use of AI with the development of critical thinking & independent problem-solving skills. Preparing students for an AI-driven workforce is crucial, as employers will increasingly seek individuals adept at using AI tools. While Apple's generative AI features hold promise for enhancing education across the RGS Worcester Family of Schools, they also present challenges that require careful consideration.
