I hear many, many complaints about healthcare, health insurance and this broken system. "What is the point of insurance?" "Insurance is nothing but a scam." Let me ask you, would you work for free? Would you take on the responsibility of diagnosing and medicating men, women and children day in and day out for free? I certainly would not want that responsibility. I'd want to make sure I was very thorough and ran all the necessary tests on anyone I treated to ensure their health and safety. I'd like to think that my knowledge and passion for helping others would be enough to make up for human error in the event of a misdiagnosis on my part. But we know that's not how this works. When it's YOUR loved one that was misdiagnosed, you want someone to be held accountable. The liability is enormous. Doctors are human beings, far from perfect. You know what helps to give them peace of mind to continue saving lives everyday? Insurance. It's there to help lessen the burden/risk in the event something unexpected does happen. Health insurance is the same. Obviously people have to work in this sector as well. People earn a living in many roles in the insurance industry. I can't understand why this is upsetting to people. I help people with health insurance everyday, for free. While it's true that I get compensated when I help someone enroll in a health plan, my services are free to consumers. It's frustrating to hear people complain about others getting paid to work when it applies to things like insurance, for example. No one wants to work for free. So much speculation is swirling around the senseless murder that took the life of the CEO of UnitedHealthcare. An ordinary person who did extraordinary work in the insurance industry. At the end of the day, a man, a leader, a husband, a father and numerous other titles he held, was murdered. Where he worked and how he was compensated seem to make people think their insensitive comments are somehow relevant. They aren't.
“We are deeply saddened and shocked at the passing of our dear friend and colleague Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare. Brian was a highly respected colleague and friend to all who worked with him. We are working closely with the New York Police Department and ask for your patience and understanding during this difficult time. Our hearts go out to Brian’s family and all who were close to him.”

Giving Back is the Cooperative Way: A Message from CEO Donnie Spivey "As you enter this season of traditions and celebrations, I urge you to focus on the important things in your life—faith, family and friends. It is so easy to get caught up in the “busyness” of the season, that we don’t allow ourselves to take the time to truly enjoy the most important parts of our lives." Storytelling often thrives in spaces that promote diversity, as seen in Nema’s journey—first shared in Maasai, then translated into Swahili, and finally narrated in English. Amplifying rural and ethnic voices, often in languages less widely spoken, demands intentional action from organizations. As someone in communications, I admire how the team at the Foundation for African Medicine and Education (FAME) reflects the community it serves. This ensures that every visitor feels seen and heard, and when they wish to share their testimony or story, language is no barrier.
Nema spent the last couple of months at FAME Hospital. When she was finally discharged during Christmas week, she was moved to tears of joy. She had arrived with her mother, carrying her baby as delicately as possible. Born at 6 months and weighing only 0.5 kilograms, he was more fragile than most newborns. Before setting off on their long journey home to welcome the New Year together as a family, Nema wanted to share her story, but overwhelmed with emotion, she passed the task to her mama, who sat beside her and recounted their experience. Today, like Nema’s family, we celebrate new beginnings. We wish you a very Happy 2025!
