As we celebrate Shark Week, let's take a moment to appreciate these fascinating and often misunderstood creatures. Sharks play a crucial role in maintaining the health of our oceans and ecosystems. Their presence is a sign of a thriving marine environment. Shark conservation is more important than ever. Overfishing, habitat loss, and climate change pose significant threats to their populations. By raising awareness and supporting conservation efforts, we can help protect these magnificent animals for future generations. Whether you're a marine enthusiast, conservationist, or simply curious, Shark Week offers a great opportunity to learn more about these incredible creatures and the challenges they face. Let's work together to ensure sharks remain an essential part of our oceans. ?? #SharkWeek #OceanConservation #MarineLife #SaveOurSharks #Sustainability

Happy International Ghost Shark Day from the IUCN SSC Shark Specialist Group! Our team and partners work to understand, protect, and assess the conservation status sharks, rays, and chimaeras ("ghost sharks"), using the best available scientific data. There are 55 confirmed species of chimaeras around the world. Thirty-seven (67.3%) of these have been assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The remaining species are Vulnerable (n=4), Near Threatened (n=4), and Data Deficient (n =10). On this #WorldOceanDay, let’s acknowledge the invaluable role of #sharks in nurturing a vibrant and resilient ocean. ?? Areas with healthy shark populations have been shown to boast larger and more abundant fish populations that help sustain billions of people who rely on seafood for nourishment and income. As the pressures of overfishing and climate change persist, and as research continues to shed light on how sharks can help mitigate these threats, the importance of safeguarding sharks becomes increasingly evident. At Shark Conservation Fund, we are steadfast in our commitment to driving #WavesofChange for ocean health through strategic shark conservation efforts. By safeguarding sharks, we ensure a healthier future for our oceans and communities. ?? Explore more about our initiatives: https://lnkd.in/etGmtmX5 . . . ??: Olivier Bourgeois via Getty Images

Sharks can be pretty scary, but they’re the ones that need saving! Around 100 million sharks are killed every year. Insane! ?? The main reason? Overfishing. Even though sharks often aren’t targeted, they end up as bycatch. This is bad news for our oceans, since sharks are vital for marine ecosystems. This massive decline in shark population is disrupting the delicate balance of ocean food webs and can have severe consequences for marine ecosystems. Unless we do something about it! And that’s exactly what we are doing. So, in our latest mission, we supported a groundbreaking shark conservation method that could be a game-changer for marine protection worldwide. Our mission partner, Greg Nowell has pioneered this method, revolutionizing shark conservation. And it all started in an unexpected place: his garage. His story shows how small, grassroots projects can make the biggest difference! Yet, they’re often the ones that need funding the most. Thanks to our incredible community, we can support Greg and projects like his! Want to see our mission in action? Check out our video and let us know what you think: https://lnkd.in/d7csgQYx

Sharks are in desperate need of journalists who understand the peril they are facing and the importance of their survival to our ocean's ecosystems. We need less sensational stories about shark bites, more on the fact that sharks are one of the most threatened taxa in the WORLD, second only to amphibians. To support this effort to encourage awareness about sharks, we've produced a media guide with facts, data, and terminology compiled by a variety of shark conservation organizations and experts. We need to tell the true story about sharks; that if we don't act now, we could reach a tipping point within the next 10 years. Media Guide: https://lnkd.in/gWxNxnqK ?? In ecosystems as complex as #Louisiana's wetlands, even small variations can add up to big differences. CC&E graduate student Kevin Stoner has been working in the Big Branch Marsh National Wildlife Refuge, researching marsh restoration techniques. "Even if we can improve these projects by one or two percent, that, scaled up, would mean big differences in outcomes," he says. Today, in honor of #worldwetlandsday, we take a look at his research. The northern Bering Sea is home to an abundance of Arctic wildlife including walruses, bearded seals and bowhead whales. But this biodiverse place could soon be destroyed by commercial bottom-trawl fishing nets dragged across the seafloor for “research.” Bottom trawling is exceptionally destructive. Massive trawl nets scrape the seafloor and catch everything in their wake — including whales and seals who get entangled and drown. The nets destroy fragile marine ecosystems. This area is currently protected from commercial bottom-trawl gear, but the Science Center thinks its activities should be exempt. Help protect Arctic wildlife today?? https://biodiv.us/3X0Z7v4
