I’ve been asked this question too many times to count and I’m finally ready to share … “What is your #TEDx idea?” Before my neck injury, I was passionately using my Master’s Degree in Educational and Community Renewal to help schools and communities learn to work more effectively together to better prepare students for life beyond the classroom. I was seeing the benefits for both students and communities, and even intended to pursue a Doctorate. However, for the past decade, a traumatic brain injury, sheared brain stem, and broken neck have taken center stage, instead. Combining the concepts I learned through my work in educational and community renewal with my personal story of self-advocacy, resilience, and overcoming adversity, while fighting through the medical and disability systems, I created a Personal Renewal Plan. When this 7-step Personal Renewal Plan is applied to schools and communities, we can reimagine education and better prepare students for life. Using my story and experience to help transform educational communities is one of my dreams. I’m so eager to share this for the first time on a TEDx stage! At last month's webinar with Chantelle George Consulting. I shed light on crucial strategies for nonprofits and community-based organizations to support students of color from underserved communities. We identified six key pillars which guide our work here at CG Consulting: Nonprofit/CBO Professional Development and Training: Invest in training that equips staff to understand the unique challenges and needs of students of color. Understanding Student’s Lived Experiences: Center student voices and experiences to develop culturally relevant programs and interventions. Supporting Students with Mental Health and Racial Climate Challenges: Prioritize mental health resources and create safe spaces for students to address racial climate issues. Connecting Students to Key Resources on Campus: Build strong relationships with campus departments and offices to ensure students have access to essential resources. The Impact of the Trusted Adult on Campus: Cultivate a network of trusted adults who can mentor and support students' academic and personal success. New from the Commerce Meets Classroom blog today: a?call for a community approach to chronic absenteeism! One thing we can all agree on is that if students aren't in school, they aren't learning. It's crucial to get students back in class and invested in their learning to kickstart students' academic recovery after the pandemic. The business community across the country can play a major role in creating a culture of attendance and building coalitions to address chronic absence. The special education process typically dissects a student’s needs then siloes services to separate skill areas. This makes meaningful inclusion almost impossible – especially as it seldom fully includes general educators, parents, and the child. Collaborative Curiosity offers a transformative approach. It allows IEP Teams to expand their collective understanding of the child, then develop and implement IEPs that foster seamless inclusion. Heightening barriers to inclusion, the system separates process and best practice training between school and family service providers. While PD Collab offerings are primarily intended for school staff and those seeking DESE PDPs, advocates, attorneys and related service providers are strongly encouraged to attend. Members in Action Amy Warren, from Wichita, Kansas, is a Screens in Schools Work Group member, advocating for smarter and safer tech use since attending the inaugural Screen Time Action Network conference in 2018. She was a staunch supporter of Screen Free Week in the early years of her involvement. Her focus on screen use in school began after the chaos that came with her son playing Prodigy on a school-issued device during the pandemic. Fairplay's campaign against Prodigy was a timely and valuable resource for her as she began advocating for smarter tech use in her son's school. Amy joined the Screens in Schools Work Group, which helped her to continue this journey. The shared information, resources, and camaraderie of the group has been the missing puzzle piece for her advocacy, which involves building relationships with schools, district staff, and other parents. This fall, Amy and SiS member Kim Whitman were invited to serve on the Kansas State Board of Education Blue Ribbon Task Force discussing personal device use during school. Their participation during the meetings contributed directly to recommendations for stronger statewide bell-to-bell policies in K-12 schools. Building upon the advocacy of other Screens in Schools members, Amy and Kim are now working to influence legislation that will hopefully result in more Kansas schools moving toward similar bell-to-bell policies. She serves as the parent representative on the Strategic Planning Committee for Technology for her local school district and recently hosted the first Tech Talk at her sons' elementary school. ? ?
