Did you know that your furry friend could be your brain's best ally? New research from JAMA Network reveals that pet ownership among adults over 50 who live alone may lead to fewer verbal memory problems. In a study encompassing 7,945 participants, those with a companion animal showed less decline in verbal memory and fluency compared to their pet-less counterparts. While pet ownership didn't yield the same benefits for those living with others, the findings highlight the potential cognitive perks of having a four-legged friend by your side. Verbal memory and fluency are crucial indicators of cognitive health, and maintaining them is key in warding off cognitive decline. Plus, the companionship pets provide can alleviate loneliness, a significant risk factor for dementia and cognitive impairment. While more research is needed to fully understand the impact of pet ownership on cognitive health, these findings show the importance of identifying strategies for healthier aging. We specify that our homesitters must care for all cats strictly in accordance with clients’ instructions and we provide appropriate checklists to ensure that every aspect of care and routine is considered – nothing is left to chance. On joining us, our homesitters are issued with a substantial manual covering all aspects of home and pet-sitting. They have to follow detailed procedures, and we keep them up-to-date with newsletters. With regard to cat sitting, we specifically cover: *assessing a cat on first meeting *following the cat’s normal routines *caring for elderly cats *assessing changes in behaviour, and taking appropriate action Our cat sitters are conscientious and vigilant; they will check your cat regularly for any physical or behavioural changes. We instruct that should a cat seem unwell, the homesitters should not hesitate to contact the vet and to ring Head Office for advice and support. Having been founded in 1980, we have substantial reserves of knowledge and our homesitters know that they can contact us at any time (and they talk to a human, not an answering machine!). After every assignment we obtain detailed feedback from our clients, and we specifically ask about the cats and their condition on the client’s return. Often our clients report that not only were their cats in fine fettle, but they suspect that they would have liked to have gone home with their homesitters…rather ruffling, but what better testimony to your cat sitter’s care could you have? Yes, dogs can get epilepsy too. Seizures is one of the topics we cover on our training – signs and symptoms to look for, causes and what to do. ?? ?? If you think your dog is having a seizure, give them space, make it as dark and quiet as possible, keep other dogs and people away and time the seizure (video too if poss). Call the vet urgently if it lasts for more than 3 minutes and isn’t stopping.
