7 Tips for Growing Your Career After Children

Having children significantly impacts our lives, both at home and in the workplace. Many working mothers feel the strain of trying to manage their time effectively to contribute at work, be present for their families, and carve out essential self-care. The precious resource of time, once abundant, becomes constrained and valuable. Many mothers accept that having a family might slow their career growth. However, with careful boundary-setting and strategic time management, working mothers can continue to progress in their careers.

At Indian Women in Dubai, we understand the unique challenges working mothers face as they navigate the demands of career and family life. Our community is dedicated to empowering women to achieve their professional goals while maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

Here are seven tips to help establish these boundaries and propel your career forward:

1. Be Strategic with Your Time and Energy

Not all tasks are created equal. To avoid burnout, prioritize projects that offer the highest return on investment (ROI) for your time and energy. Set clear objectives with your manager and focus on activities that align with these goals. This strategy allows you to say no to tasks that don't support your priorities.

2. Protect Your Time

See your time as valuable and finite. Proactively block your calendar for non-negotiable personal activities like picking up the kids or exercising. Communicate your availability clearly, and don't hesitate to decline requests that infringe on these protected times. This approach not only helps you maintain a work-life balance but also enhances the perceived value of your time within the organization.

3. Skip Non-Essential Meetings

An implicit assumption in the workplace is we must press the “Accept” button on every meeting invitation that crosses our inbox. The reality is many meetings feel like a waste of time, and we take back time by saying no. When an invite comes in for a non-essential meeting, ask for agendas and/or specifics about the meeting before accepting. Decline meetings that don’t contribute to your priorities or fall during a time you are (or want to be) unavailable but offer to listen to recordings or even loop in a colleague who can assist.

4. Make Invisible Work Visible

Women often take on invisible tasks both at home and work. Turn these tasks into opportunities to showcase your leadership. For example, if you take notes in meetings, share them with attendees and outline next steps. This not only expands your network but also highlights your organizational skills and leadership potential.

5. Play to Your Strengths

Identify and focus on your strengths to boost performance and confidence. Align your work to emphasize these strengths, making tasks more enjoyable and productive. This approach can open doors to leadership opportunities and help you prioritize your time effectively.

6. Avoid Overcommitting

We think we will have more time in the future, which leads to overcommitment and constant busyness. Before saying yes to a new project or commitment, think about the opportunity. Be honest with yourself about what you can handle, both now and in the future. If this impacts your work, talk to your manager and leverage your established goals to prioritize your time.

7. Manage Up

Your manager significantly influences your time. Build a strong relationship with your manager by communicating your professional and personal commitments. Understand their priorities and align your work to support their goals. This proactive approach can enhance your value to the team and create a supportive work environment.

At IWD, we believe that working mothers can achieve their career ambitions without sacrificing their family life. By establishing boundaries, focusing on strategic tasks, and leveraging the support of online communities, women can find balance and success.

The graduate part three: Martino, after having passed his high school leaving exam, spent the mornings in which he didn't get out of bed at midday, when he got out of bed earlier he loitered around the town riding an old but still functional bicycle and one morning a insect probably a bee stings him on one of the lips of his mouth and he goes home and treats himself with water and salt. Then he leaves the apartment where he lived with his mother and father when by chance he meets his father who is also out on a bicycle and Marino tells his father that he was stung by a bee and treated himself with water and salt and tells his father: ((I have to do something in life! anything but without doing anything I can't resist, I have to, I need to do something.)) But now what would he have done in life?
