In April, the Central Arkansas Library System celebrated the grand reopening of the Sue Cowan Williams Library in downtown Little Rock. The library was closed for renovations led by AMR Architects and included relocating the entrance, and several other external and internal upgrades. The Crafton Tull team worked alongside AMR to provide plans for new sidewalks and crosswalks for enhanced safety and access to both the Dunbar Garden and Dunbar Middle School. We are proud to be a part of this project that better connects this community with this valuable resource.

A piece of West Des Moines history came tumbling down this week. ??? The 130-year-old building that housed The Longest Yard sports bar in Valley Junction is no more. As I watched the demolition, I couldn't help but feel a mix of nostalgia and excitement for what's to come. For decades, this spot was a gathering place for sports fans, a hub of community spirit, and a landmark in our evolving cityscape. How many of you have memories tied to this old building? ?? But change is inevitable, and often necessary for growth. The demolition marks not just an end, but a new beginning for Valley Junction. It's a tangible sign of our city's progress and development. What do you think should replace this historic site? ?? ? A modern eatery to carry on the location's legacy? ? A community space to bring people together? ? A mixed-use development to boost local businesses? Let's use this moment to reflect on how we balance preserving our heritage with embracing the future. After all, the stories and connections formed within those old walls will live on in our community's collective memory. Share your thoughts or favorite memories of The Longest Yard below! Let's keep the spirit of this West Des Moines landmark alive, even as we look forward to what's next. #WestDesMoines #ValleyJunction #CommunityDevelopment #UrbanPlanning #LocalHistory

On February 5, Commonwealth Preservation Group (CPG) virtually presented analysis of the Cultural Heritage Stewardship Plan (CHSP) survey responses (formerly known as the Cultural Resources Management Plan) from the Richmond community. Key takeaways show that Richmonders value character and culture, not just physical buildings; that development is perceived as the greatest threat to our cultural heritage; and equity and inclusion are a crucial part of the process. The survey results call for protections of our historic resources that are not cost-prohibitive, and recognize that the relationship between affordable housing, growth, and preservation are complex. CPG was hired by Virginia Department of Historic Resources (VDHR) and the City of Richmond (the City) to develop this plan, and have been working closely with Historic Richmond throughout the process. CPG has compiled Phase 2’s findings from the survey taken this fall to create a draft outline that is now available for public comment. The draft outline is available for comments until February 15. We think it provides a good overarching framework and look forward to seeing more detailed recommendations. The City will be hosting two community open houses on February 28, details below: ? Main Public Library, Basement Auditorium, 11:00am – 1:00pm, 101 E Franklin St ? Hickory Hill Community Center, 5:00pm - 7:00pm, 3000 E Belt Blvd This plan is meant to augment our City’s existing policies, ordinances, & programs in alignment with Richmond 300: A Guide for Growth and will be publicly shared this summer – make sure your voice is heard! Join RDG’s Charlie Cowell, AICP, Scotney Fenton and Michelle Sacco Cunliffe as they present an introduction to historic guidelines at the Preserve Iowa Summit on June 7. Historic design guidelines ensure that the quality and integrity of neighborhoods and downtown districts are not lost. Whether for residential neighborhoods or commercial districts, historic design guidelines can be a useful tool for educating residents or can be used as a "how-to" guide for historic preservation commissions. Further action includes these guidelines in the regulatory standards for city staff and planning commissions. https://ow.ly/ETM950RPktj
