As we celebrate Pride Month, I’ve been reflecting on why diversity and inclusion in the workplace remain such important topics and what they mean to me personally. ? I believe that one of the strongest biases that we need to overcome is the “like-me” bias, to ensure that we surround ourselves with different perspectives and experiences. Ensuring diversity at the forefront means giving everyone equal opportunity regardless of their gender, background, sexual orientation - which is fair and results in hiring and promoting the very best people. It’s also been proven over and over again (e.g., https://lnkd.in/eECSZDXX) that a diverse team outperforms an homogeneous one, all other things equal. So, promoting diversity means forming a stronger, better performing team…and inclusion? We should start from inclusion. Promoting diversity in a non-inclusive environment is a recipe for higher attrition at best and harassment at worst. That’s why I’m proud that being part of ABB is to be part of an organization committed to supporting LGBTQ+ communities by creating an inclusive environment that brings people together. It’s our duty to foster a sense of belonging so that our colleagues can bring their authentic selves to work every day. ???Celebrating Diversity Beyond Pride Month - Let's Make an Impact with Small Decisions??? As Pride Month comes to a close, it leaves us with a reminder that our celebration of diversity shouldn't end here. The small decisions we make every day can have a significant impact on fostering inclusivity and progress. We often believe we're supporting diversity, but it's important to reflect on how our individual actions contribute to the cause. Sometimes, it's the subtle, unconscious ways we interact that can make a difference. Consider a personal example from my family. I have four boys, ranging from a high school sophomore to college graduates. If I asked them all for vacation activity ideas, they'd likely suggest something like riding quads because it's "fun." However, if I included ideas from a female cousin or a girlfriend, shopping might come up as "fun" too. This simple example illustrates a complex issue. Our backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives shape our ideas and decisions. Embracing diverse viewpoints leads to richer, more innovative outcomes in all areas of life. Let's continue to champion diversity and inclusion, not just during Pride Month, but every day. Week 22: This week I felt very grateful! Thank you to everyone who I get to work with & the colleagues turned friends who value and truly feel me! I've really meditated on togetherness this week. When we're together, authentically -- magic can happen, it can be ugly sometimes -- but there's beauty in that too! We must commit to spaces that embrace diversity & inclusion. Diversity isn't always the hard part, diversity happens by nature! Inclusion is the hard part because we don't know what we want to invite people to share, how to ask them to share it and how to create safe environments for people to share consistently, thus diversity dwindles and ceases. I often ask myself: how committed & resourced am I to help people who are different than me & my community, feel safe to be themselves??And who/what can help me get consistently better at being inclusive?
