I often get asked about my perspective on college rankings. Certainly, perspectives change depending on how the rankings look for a particular institution. If the rankings are good or great for the institution, well then, they are the true measure of the institution. If the rankings aren't so great, then we don't look to rankings to define the institution's value. Today, the #WSJ rankings are wildly positive for Cal Poly Pomona. So what is my perspective? Do. The. Right. Thing. - and the rankings will take care of themselves. At the Cal Poly Pomona College of Engineering, "learn by doing" rules the day. What we do "beyond" the classroom in student clubs and competition teams prepares students for their careers. Student success comes from intentionality, engagement, rigor, and belonging. Do these things right, and the rankings don't matter. While No. 7 on the list of public institutions is a great testament to what California State Polytechnic University-Pomona does right, we are #1 at changing the lives of the students who choose to make this their academic home. CLPCCD students make an important investment in their future by enrolling at Chabot College and Las Positas College. In return for their investment, CLPCCD’s students will receive a stream of higher future earnings that will continue to grow throughout their working lives. For example, the average 2022-23 CLPCCD associate degree graduate will see annual earnings that are $12,000 higher than a person with a high school diploma or equivalent working in California. Over a working lifetime, the benefits of an associate degree over a high school diploma will amount to a value of $492,000 in higher earnings per graduate. The present value of the cumulative higher future earnings CLPCCD’s 2022-23 students will receive over their working careers is $723.M. If you're considering applying to Oxbridge, you'll need to choose between the two, as you can't apply to both @University of Oxford and @University of Cambridge in the same academic year. But why is that? Speculation has circulated that intense rivalry between the universities drives this policy, but the reality is more pragmatic. It boils down to managing supply and demand. Both institutions anticipate a deluge of applications, therefore, allowing applicants to apply to both would inundate them with even more to assess for limited available slots. Moreover, it could result in both universities interviewing candidates who could only ultimately attend one, leading to inefficiencies in the selection process. One positive aspect of this arrangement, however, is that it forces applicants to deliberate carefully about which institution they truly prefer, rather than simply aiming for "Oxbridge." On Stakeholders and Strategy – Part 2: The same year that NSERC developed the Strategy for Partnership and Innovation, it also launched a program to fund (applied) research at colleges.?With the strong encouragement of college stakeholders, NSERC had launched a pilot in 2004 and then the College and Community Innovation (CCI) grants in 2008-2009 (here colleges are shorthand for colleges, polytechnics & cegeps). The CCI program started with one grant type and an annual budget of $15 million.?Fast forward 15 years and the program has budget over $100 million and seven grant types – which 120 colleges compete for. College applied research has a compelling value proposition: it is centred on colleges (faculty, staff and students) working with Canadian firms on short projects that are designed around the firms’ needs. Foreground intellectual property usually goes to the firm for further commercialization. It’s a solid premise, and has a proven track record of contributing to business innovation. The CCI program’s continued growth has a lot to do with external stakeholder support: - colleges care about their CCI funding and are proud to showcase its impacts to government; - community leaders can see the impact of the program on their colleges; and, - the small and medium firms it helps are also inclined to speak for it.? This vital support means CCI has survived multiple changes at NSERC and continues to grow. ? I’ve recently been a part of interesting conversations with educators regarding the “funneling” effect educational CTE pathways have on kid’s futures. I’ve sensed a clash between CTE pathways and proponents of more traditional and rigorous instruction like the IB Diploma. What’s best for our kids? What offers the brightest future? Hands-on learning can be a lot of fun! More dynamic specialized instruction seems to be here to stay and enrollment numbers support this. Rather than perpetuating current realities, educational institutions carry the reponsibility to expose and push students to realize their full potential and not settle into whatever their immediate context says they “should be”. Becoming a billboard for opportunities is important. Being student advocates is crucial. At Wold, we believe that listening to community, parents, students and educators is the only the way to do the right thing.
