?? What an incredible Intern Team Building Day we had at Crabbe yesterday for our 2024 Government of Jersey Internship Programme!?? A huge thank you to Gemma McGregor the Jersey Youth Service, our wonderful colleagues at CYPES, and my amazing colleagues in the Talent Team for making this event such a success. The group of 41 interns who attended learned a range of invaluable skills, including: Effective Communication: Understanding the importance of clear and concise communication in a team setting. Problem-Solving: Developing creative solutions to overcome challenges. Teamwork: Building trust and working collaboratively to achieve common goals. Leadership: Taking initiative and guiding peers through various activities. Adaptability: Adjusting to new situations and thinking on their feet. It was awesome to see everyone working together across departments to produce this amazing event. Grateful for the opportunity to bond, grow, and have fun together. He shared invaluable insights on cracking research internships. The tips ranged from his diverse stints - right from working with FMS to the University of Cambridge??. Internships are the "gift that keeps on giving!" In addition to resume-worthy experience and increased confidence, these interns also earned money in their pockets and directly saw the connection between their efforts and economic gain. This is a powerful lesson in building a work ethic. If their 80-hour internship paid the $16 per hour minimum wage (note that Port of Los Angeles internships pay a higher "living wage"), they earned $1,280 this summer. With 125 students, EXP, through its internship partners, put an additional $160,000 into our comminities this summer through the summer internship. Based on research and past observation, as much as half of this money goes towards supporting household expenses. About one in five students uses their summer wages to save for college. (Boston Summer Youth Program data, but I have personally seen it in LA.) An internship is truly an investment that has a ripple effect to impact entire communities.
