A series of exchanges related to international students is driving this post so bear with me. The current policy shift by the federal government focused on international student numbers as a remedy to our current housing crisis is creating a fuel for racist, xenophobic and islamaphobic undertones in the discourse. As a leader in the #postsecondaryeducation sector and as a proud Canadian who is Muslim ,Black and part of an immigrant family, I am especially attuned to how talk and opinions with these disgusting undertones are a danger to our beautiful Canadian mosaic. Besides, if there were no international students, you wouldn't have people like Mohamed Lachemi leading a prominent university in Canada, or Prem Watsa becoming Canada's Warren Buffet, or Michael Lee Chin, a successful Canadian businessman and philanthropist supporting future generations of Canadians in hospitals and the arts. And the list goes on. Brilliant Catalyst will continue to support our international students wherever we can since they are an important part of our #Ridgeback family. We may not always be able to completely solve the lack of resources available to this part of our population, but we will never shy away from finding innovative solutions to include all students, regardless of where they are from in our activities. Tomorrow, in #Bruxelles, we are going to participate in the event “Opening up / Decompartmentalising educational approaches – the benefit of mixing up citizenship education and profession” too: a workshop focusing on the #Liceal project funded by the #Erasmus+ programme. ?? The event is at 10-12 at #CaritasEuropa (Rue de la Charité 43, 1210 Brussels) and it is part of the #LifeLongLearningWeek. ???? This project aims to support adult learners, particularly those facing challenges in the labor market and social marginalization, by developing their social, civic, and relational skills. These skills will enhance their social #inclusion, active #participation in democratic life, and #employability. ??? The key strategic objective of the project is to #empower learners to self-assess and undertake personal development projects that contribute to their social inclusion and employability. ????♀? The project also promotes #civicengagement and participation, in line with recent policy initiatives to develop social and relational skills alongside traditional employability skills. ?? I am so happy to share a journey that started with a casual conversation between me and my friend Diya Mehta about embarking on a public engagement project within the Undergraduate Research Support Scheme. We were selected to conduct this project and secured a grant for the same. We wanted to create a meaningful change and decided to dive into the lives of immigrants in the UK. This project aimed to foster understanding, awareness and compassion by documenting and sharing their lived experiences. What began as a simple idea was transformed into an impactful project, "Beyond Borders: Exploring Immigrants' Experience in the UK." ?We collaborated with the Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS) UK, conducting one-hour workshops with 10-15 participants each. The workshops included facilitating focus group discussions about various topics such as people’s initial challenges after coming to the UK, their cultural integration in the community and navigating the future. ?With participants' consent, we recorded audio during discussions to document their experiences anonymously. ?Furthermore, we are developing a self-curated website to share these stories. We even received the opportunity to present our research at the British Conference of Undergraduate Research (BCUR) 2024 at London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). Our journey from concept to execution was filled with learning and challenges. It wouldn't have been possible without the support of our supervisor and mentor Gitit Kadar-Satat (Cohen). Are we prepared to consider the impact of our learning activities? Some time ago, we met with a consultant who made it clear that our methods at Minders are correct and what "we" need in the learning landscape. However, he also noted that companies often do not invest in ensuring their learning activities have an impact. Instead, they prefer to simply check a box and move on. At first, this perspective was provoking! However, we learned from it. We realized there's a balance to strike between the ambitious vision of entrepreneurship and the practical constraints of organizational habits and budgets. Today, we understand that people and organizations do care, but it's crucial to make sure that the gap between current practices and future improvements are manageable. Today, on International Youth Day, we proudly spotlight the incredible strides we’ve made by helping shape the future of young Moldovans. Our commitment to empowering youth through education is not just a mission but a profound investment in the potential of every young individual.
