We’re thrilled to announce the biggest land conservation initiative in Mass Audubon’s 128-year history: the $75 million 30x30 Catalyst Fund. Natural lands clean our air and water, provide critical wildlife habitat, and capture and store climate-heating carbon, keeping it out of the atmosphere. In 2022, leaders from 190 countries united around a shared goal to conserve 30% of their lands and waters by 2030. We believe Massachusetts can lead the way, with the new Catalyst Fund helping the Commonwealth to reach those goals, in collaboration with public, private, and nonprofit conservation partners. Seeded by a transformative $25 million gift from MathWorks, we’re raising a total of $75 million to help achieve 30x30 in Massachusetts and provide a model for other states and regions to take on the challenge! Founder Hendrikus van Hensbergen shares why this work and this project is vital: Young people are more aware than ever of the acute climate and ecological crisis we face. Many now articulate this concern and the need for change through coordinated global campaign movements, despite increasing feelings of anxiety, distress and betrayal associated with inadequate action from those in positions of power. 64% of young people here in the UK tell us that they are suffering fro m eco-anxiety. Their childhood blighted by a sense of loss. Yet they are missing out on two of the best antidotes to these paralysing feelings. The first is a deep connection to nature in their immediate surroundings, on their doorstep. 43% of young people aged 11-16 spend as little as?8.5 minutes a day in nature. This is compounded by the poor level of access to nature and greenspace, which is particularly heavily weighted against those from minoritised and marginalised backgrounds. With this loss comes the loss of nourishing relationships to place, to other living beings, a relationship that has well-evidenced and profoundly positive impacts on their learning, behaviour, health and wellbeing, as well as the likelihood that they will fight to protect the earth as adults. The second antidote is to be a part of the solution - to take practical action for nature and have a say in decisions made about the future of our landscapes, alongside adults. 81% of young people want to do more to protect and restore nature, yet their energy and ingenuity is wasted by a systemic lack of opportunities made available by NGOs and Government for them to do so. Almost two-thirds of young people tell us they do not feel adults listen to their ideas and worries about the state of the planet. And so we find two connected crises. The loss of species and the fragmentation of habitats and the loss of childhood and the fragmented opportunities for young people to work with adults to be a part of positive change. The Penpont Project is about weaving these threads back together again, about recognising that our fraying ecosystems and the young people of Wales, and the UK more widely, are deeply in need of each other. As a group of inspiring, dedicated and deeply caring young people, together with the team at Action for Conservation, knowledgeable elders, farmers, growers, foresters, and custodians, we have delved into Penpont’s past and present. These explorations informed the creation of our shared vision for Penpont’s future as a place richer in both nature and community. And now we are beginning to turn that vision into reality through ambitious actions with and on the land, in classrooms and within our minds. A legacy we will all bequeath to Penpont’s future custodians in the decades ahead.

Our Chief Executive, Jo Pike, has written to Joe Fitzpatrick MSP and Lorna Slater MSP requesting that the application for a golf course at Coul Links is called in by The Scottish Government after being approved The Highland Council. "Government high-level ambition on the nature and climate crisis is clear. The draft Scottish Biodiversity Strategy puts in place the entirely necessary, ambitious targets of halting biodiversity loss by 2030 and restoring and regenerating biodiversity by 2045. Additionally, the National Planning Framework 4, Policy 3 claims to “rebalance the planning system in favour of conserving, restoring and enhancing biodiversity and promotes investment in nature-based solutions, benefiting people and nature.” It is the Scottish Wildlife Trust’s view that these statements would mean very little without effective actions to back them up. In the case of Coul Links, this means calling in the application." Long focused on inspiring Healthy People, a Healthy Planet and a Healthy Way of Life, the Life Time Foundation has recently increased its focus on the Healthy Planet element of our mission with hyper-focused on supporting forestation and conservation initiatives. To date, we have provided more than $1.2 million in grants, positively impacting us all (including more than 27,000 children) by: - Helping to conserve over 100 acres of existing forests. - Supporting efforts to restore endangered tree species. - Establishing school food forests, offering edible gardens and learning opportunities outside the classroom on nutrition and the environment. - Planting roots for the community through the creation of a pocket forest to act as a natural oasis and sanctuary. These efforts are just the beginning of inspiring a healthier planet, and we look forward to making an even bigger impact for future generations!
