Real change to advance equity requires those who wield power to change our own practices. Well-being and Equity (WE) in the World is honored to partner with Humana Foundation to explore how funders can make practical changes in their grantmaking processes to help resources get to brilliant changemakers who are closest to the systemic barriers that stand in the way of achieving health and well-being.

As our mission implores us to do, in 2023 we started “doing more” to support college campuses facing a suicide loss. As our team jumped into action to support a S.D. college campus that experienced multiple suicides in one semester, we realized that some of the resources that schools desperately need after a suicide didn’t exist. We used best-practice materials to create the straightforward guide these schools needed to support their campus community and develop policies. This guide that we developed is called the Campus Postvention Best Practices Guide. ? ?????????? ?????????????????? ? Two partners of the J. J. Keller Foundation are teaming up to make an even stronger impact in our community, particularly serving Transitional Age Youth aging out of the Foster Care System. HeadsUp Fox Cities and Pillars, Inc. are reintroducing a transitional housing program, previously known as the Ascend Program. This new initiative will combine HeadsUp personalized path case management program with stable housing, a managed property of Pillars, Inc. Housing remains the most urgent challenge for HeadsUp Fox Cities participants. This solution offers comprehensive, wrap-around support for young adults who have experienced personal and systemic trauma. While the program will gradually transition to full operations in 2025, we are already looking forward to narrowing the gap on this critical need in our community.

Affordable Housing: Increased access to affordable housing options, rent assistance programs, and initiatives to prevent homelessness can help families maintain stable living conditions. ???????????????? Quality education: Equitable funding for public schools, access to early childhood education, and programs to support students with special needs can ensure all children receive a high-quality education. ???????????????? Youth Programs and Opportunities: Investment in youth programs, community centers, and summer activities can help young people stay engaged, learn new skills, and build positive futures. ???????????????? Family Support Services: Access to family support services, including parenting classes, respite care for caregivers, and family counseling, can provide critical assistance in managing these challenges. By addressing these needs through community engagement, policy changes, and targeted support programs, Connecticut can help ensure that all families have the resources and opportunities they need to flourish.

Silence is Not an Option: A Call to Action Against Community Violence - Dr. Kyza A. Callwood In communities plagued by violence, the cycle of loss feels relentless, leaving scars that run deep. As we witness the rising tide of senseless killings, it’s clear that our collective silence is no longer an option. Each statistic represents a life cut short, a family forever changed, and a future extinguished. We must recognize that change starts at home and extends into our neighborhoods. Parents, teachers, and community leaders need to engage more actively, fostering open dialogues about conflict resolution, empathy, and respect. Empowering young people through mentorship programs can provide them with the guidance and support they need to navigate their challenges without resorting to violence. Moreover, we must unite as a community, not only to mourn but to mobilize. Neighborhood watch programs, community gatherings, and church-led initiatives can create safe spaces for connection and healing. The time for action is now. Let us reclaim our streets, restore our sense of safety, and rebuild a culture of respect and care. Together, we can break this cycle and forge a brighter future for our children and ourselves.
