When should you think you are a staff software engineer? Here is my two cents: - You have a working knowledge of almost all the tech stack that the project relies on. - You have gained expertise in more than one field over the course of your career. - You have been a senior software engineer for more than 3+ years with a total of 7+ years of experience in the industry. (This is debatable. Depth and breadth of experience matter more than the specific number of years.) - You care more about technical stuff than people management. - You can set the technical direction for the current or any new project. - Your work impacts not only your team but also other teams. - You don’t bind yourself to any particular technology. - You can guide any stakeholders if needed. - All the senior engineers look up to you. This is a generic template for a staff engineer. But, there might be cases where someone is only staff in one area. That will depend mostly on the product and team size. 10x Engineer - A myth? - The only requirement is to have the Never Say Never attitude. If a problem seems too difficult to solve, completely outside of your comfort zone, there are two kinds of people you will find around - - People who try to dodge and onboard "experienced" folks to do it. - People who take ownership and get it done somehow. Resources and help magically appear for the 2nd kind. Being a 10x Engineer is more of a mindset. These are some of those few people who keep broadening their skills. Today I donned the hat of an iOS developer and as I said earlier help magically appears. Thanks to Agam Mahajan for guiding me with the intricacies. Whether I am a 10x Engineer or not, I don't know, I just keep trying. 10x engineers are not hired, they are spotted in an organization. They are a very rare breed. To all the HRs and Managers, if you spot one, don't ever let them go at any cost. We will be looking for such people soon, follow BitSave for such notifications. #engineering #innovation #hiring
