I was browsing through the Jobs section recently and noticed a trend. For positions in Patient Advocacy, Patient Liaison at companies, the requirements for this positions can exclude some of the most qualified for those positions. Most require a Bachelors or Masters with 7+ years of experience. Someone with a Bachelors or Masters doesn't always have the insight that those that have the lived experience do. While they could perform their job well, a community of people, that are equally (if not better) as qualified are not even included in the possibility. Those that have the lived experience bring a unique and very needed perspective into those positions. They typically have heard and worked with the community. They have built trust with patients and would be able to bridge that gap in a more unique and meaningful way. I'm not saying having the degree is awful. I'm saying by requiring/requesting only those with a degree apply for these positions, you're missing out on potentially incredible talent. While some of us may not have the degree, we bring years of experience, knowledge and compassion, and a passion for improving or helping the patient community. #patientexperience #patientadvocate #jobsearch #hiringrecruiters

It's not uncommon for trans folks to be hired into entry-level healthcare roles, such as community outreach, then not have opportunities to further advance their careers. Sometimes this is due to inflexible degree requirements that prevent qualified nontraditional candidates from being considered. Sometimes this is due to not having clear next-step roles or appropriate professional development opportunities in place. Sometimes this is due to implicit or explicit bias.
