Where are these people going to live and work? Reading Tasmania's Population Policy that was released today absolutely highlights the need to have state direction on how this population growth will be spatially delivered, to achieve the best outcomes for Tasmanians now and into the future. The Tasmanian Division of the Planning Institute of Australia has been advocating for a state settlement strategy that will do just this. It will bridge the gap between the population strategy and the regional land use strategies currently being reviewed to ensure that we get the right growth in the right places supported by what is needed to make great communities. It will ensure the Tasmanian planning system is ready to go. Without one, we run the risk of unaligned regional land use strategies premised on the basis of different growth scenarios. This will create misalignment between the population policy and the planning system that will be left to resolve at the coal face of the planning system, to the detriment of the community and industry. "A decline in population doesn’t automatically mean the future is bleak if there’s appropriate planning" says Nick Brunsdon, Principal Economist and Lead Demographer at Infometrics. “Many communities across New Zealand that have experienced population decline are thriving 40 years after their declines began, even if some remain smaller overall. Accepting population decline doesn’t mean accepting defeat, in some cases it means making wise decisions for the future. #infometrics #newzealand #populationdecline #population #localgovernment #regionaldevelopment

Communities need to reinvest in themselves and try to plan for growth. They can't just stay the same for 30 or 40 years because the infrastructure is aging, the population/demographics are changing, the needs of the residents and businesses change, technology and legislation is changing. Trying to stay the same by doing nothing while everything changes around you really just ends up with a community withering away. This short news clip is a good example of a community choosing not to invest in itself and plan for change, so unintended consequences and change are imposed on it, and the community has no control of those consequences because it chose to do nothing. https://lnkd.in/dEUNXEJd
