Where is the Red Cross after Hurricane Helene? We’re in local communities across several states, working with partners to ensure people’s basic needs are met. ? In Florida, we’re distributing ready-to-eat meals and relief supplies — like clean-up items — to people who have returned and are beginning to pick up the pieces of their lives. ? In Georgia, we’re also assessing damage in communities and working with partners to distribute food while continuing to shelter many people. ? In South Carolina, we’re providing safe drinking water and cots to some line workers who are working to restore power in an affected area. ? Across several open shelters in Tennessee, we’re ensuring people’s basic needs are met with food, emotional support and more. ? In North Carolina, we’re deploying dozens of emergency response vehicles daily with emergency supplies and opening shelters as needed to support the growing needs of those affected. We’re also supporting reunification efforts for those still missing loved ones. Our work doesn’t stop there — disaster teams are also helping people in Virginia and Ohio who were affected by the remnants of the storm. Like everyone, our team at Bardavon have been watching the aftermath of Hurricane Helene play out in the Southeast. There really are no words to describe the horrible devastation. The heroic stories of rescue and recovery are equally incredible and speak to the tremendous resolve of those in North Carolina, Florida, Georgia and Tennessee. This hits close to home given how many payer and provider partners we work with in the Southeast. Our client facing teams have been talking to our partners and learning secondhand of these examples where private citizens are linking arms with local and federal agencies to get relief to those in the direst situations. The stories really are remarkable. One example I thought I'd share is Carolina Aviators, who we learned about from one of our partners. The group is made up of private citizens/pilots, flying 50-100 flights a day into the most remote areas that FEMA is yet to get to, air dropping tons of water (literally), medical supplies and food. Despite the valiant efforts of first responders, the National Guard, utility teams, and humanitarian workers, many of the most severely impacted areas remain isolated, lacking access to essentials like gas, food, water, electricity, and phone service. The devastation has also reached parts of Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, and Florida. Although our facilities were not damaged, it's likely we all know someone—be it a colleague, friend, family member, neighbor or client—who has been touched by this tragedy. Two days after Hurricane Milton made landfall in Florida as a Category 3 storm, at least 16 lives have been lost, and over two million people remain without power. The need for assistance is immense. We've already given flight to responders from six relief partners to reach Florida, but we need to rush many more helping hands to provide urgent support. Leadership After the Storm: Rebuilding with Support and Compassion In the aftermath of Hurricane Milton, many of us are facing the same challenges, rebuilding, recovering, and finding a way forward. As leaders, this is a moment to show up for one another, to lend a hand, and to use our words to inspire hope. Here are a few immediate resources to help: FEMA is offering disaster assistance, so check their website for eligibility and apply for support. City of Tampa and Clearwater are offering one-day free permits for hauling debris, helping clean-up efforts move forward more efficiently. At Mirajo Collective, we’re not just talking about leadership—we’re in the trenches: - Clearing debris in our local neighborhoods. - Offering rides to those without transportation. - Partnering with local organizations to raise funds for food to help families in need. In times like these, remember that it’s okay to not have all the answers. “I may not fully understand, but I want to help in any way I can.” Offering support can be as simple as listening: “I’m here to listen if you want to talk.” Let’s remind each other that “You don’t have to go through this alone. I am fine and unscathed by the destruction in the Appalachian Mountains by Hurricane Helene. My town in East Tennessee was extremely fortunate with towns not even a half hour away experiencing catastrophic flooding and infrastructure breakdown. Some places completely cutoff except by air. Greene County’s water pump at the water treatment plant was destroyed and the entire county is out of water until a fix can be constructed and water can be treated again. I’ve seen it reported that at least 1,000 people are unaccounted for around Asheville, NC, and somehow I expect that number to grow. No one could have prepared for this. The Nolachucky River in Erwin, TN, is believed to have crested around 30’. A new record. The last time it was even close to that was in 1901 at 24’. No one alive has ever seen anything like this. I’m not even sure some of the small mountain communities can be salvaged. Some have been completely wiped off the map. Places where generation after generation have lived are likely going to have to relocate. Impoverished, extremely rural communities that barely have access to medical and industrial resources have had those lifelines destroyed. And the ripple effect in these impoverished communities will impact generations to come. I know other places have been impacted but my heart is breaking for Appalachia. My home. I don’t want the mountains to be forgotten because it’s not a typical place that needs hurricane relief. Some places will not come back from this, and the ones that can it will take years.
