Col. Kimbrough captivated the audience with his profound insights on leadership and service. Having commanded the International Space Station during Expedition 50, Col. Kimbrough knows a thing or two about leadership and innovation. He is also one of only four individuals to have flown on three different spaceflights, totaling 388 days in space, nine spacewalks, and 60 hours of spacewalking. I am fascinated by space exploration, the universe and astronauts. What I discovered after reading about an astronaut’s training program is that the aspect of leadership is more important than I had realised. For most of us, the stakes are much lower when it comes to leadership. The worst case scenario of a bad decision is that the business goes bankrupt, but at least we are still alive. For the commander and astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) priorities are clear: 1. Survive? 2. Take care of the ISS 3. Perform as many experiments as possible Clear expectations and priorities are something we can implement for our teams on Earth, too.
