Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine with special responsibility for research and innovation, Martin Heydon T.D, today launched a Department funded research report titled ‘Sustainable Transition of the Rural Economy Through Generational Renewal’, at School of Business Maynooth University. Dr Michael Hayden PhD, FCA and Dr Bridget McNally from School of Business Maynooth University, along with Anne Kinsella from Teagasc , led this research project over the past two years. An aging farming population is a major concern to the sustainability of the rural economy in Ireland. Prior research has identified the strongest barriers to innovation in agriculture are at farm level, and relate to business structures, lack of land mobility and aging farmers. In this context, through a combination of desk-based research, interviews with farmers and agricultural advisors, and a survey of farmers, the dual roles of collaborative farming and retirement income provisioning in facilitating generational renewal was comprehensively explored. Launching the report, Minister Heydon, said: “Attracting the next generation of farmers is crucial to securing the future of Irish agriculture. This important research funded by my Department looks at many of challenges and barriers to succession and importantly explores potential solutions." MSU researchers helping small processors manage wastewater From an article in MeatingPlace by Tom Johnston Article excerpts: "Michigan State University researchers are studying ways to help small meat processors in Michigan manage wastewater in accordance with new permitting standards. Funding from the Michigan Alliance for Animal Agriculture will back two MSU research projects: the first to characterize the types of wastewater they produce and determine best sampling practices to produce an accurate read on nutrient levels; and the second to assess site-specific needs. “There are relatively few options for low-volume meat processors when it comes to wastewater,” said Jeannine Schweihofer, associate director of MSU Extension’s Agriculture and Agribusiness Institute, in a news release. “The ultimate goal of this research is to provide processors with cost-effective wastewater management strategies while protecting groundwater and the environment.” The Michigan Meat Association (MMA) estimates the initial cost to satisfy the new state wastewater discharge requirements at some $840,000."
