We're thrilled to present an exclusive video interview with Olivier Lafon, a distinguished professor at the Université de Lille in France and the chief science officer at the Lille high-field NMR facility, part of the Infranalytics infrastructure. Prof. Lafon is pioneering advancements in solid-state NMR spectroscopy, utilizing the powerful 1.2 GHz NMR spectrometer. His groundbreaking work focuses on exploring the intricate structure-property relationships of materials used in energy applications, such as batteries and photovoltaics, as well as in catalysis. By developing innovative pulse sequences for solid-state NMR spectroscopy, especially at very high magnetic fields, he's able to observe quadrupolar nuclei (spin I ≥ 1), which make up 75% of NMR-active isotopes. His research provides invaluable insights into how the structure and defect levels of materials influence their properties, including ionic conductivity, catalytic activity, and optoelectronic characteristics. A week ago I gave a webinar on phase field fracture/fatigue and its application to hydrogen technologies, as part of the HyLINE II project. Vigdis Olden, who kindly invited me and arranged this event, asked to me to make it "as instructive as possible". Thus, I did my best to explain in an easy way the underlying fundamentals of phase field fracture, how it is connected with decades of well-established fracture mechanics theory (and engineering design) and how it can accelerate the deployment of a hydrogen energy infrastructure (with a particular focus on pipelines). Pleased to share our recent collaborative work on critical mineral and material engineering, focusing on dysprosium (Dy)-bearing permanent magnets. These magnets are essential components for hybrid electric vehicles and wind turbines. This work is available at https://lnkd.in/g7-WG9Be. The precise modulation of the intergranular phase is essential for attaining high coercivity in permanent magnets and is strongly influenced by the alloying of solute atoms such as Copper (Cu) and Gallium (Ga). In this work, we propose and validate an intergranular phase transformation pathway from the typical rare earth (RE)-rich cubic phase to the beneficial RE?(Fe,Cu,Ga)?? phase through the design of complex heat treatment workflows, detailed microscopy characterisation, and computational simulations. This provides valuable insights into the optimisation of phase distribution to further enhance coercivity. This work builds upon our previous research https://lnkd.in/gAcRRruT.
