The Blueberry Fields Cooperative celebrated their successful purchase of the Linnhaven community in Brunswick, Maine with a big party last night, attended by residents, Gov. Janet Mills, and other partners who supported the $26.3 million purchase. We are very proud and honored to have supported the residents through this long and fruitful process. We hope their story inspires more to pursue resident ownership as an option when it's right for them! Today’s #MayorsDeskMonday feature is City of Birmingham, Alabama, Mayor Randall Woodfin (City of Birmingham Mayor's Office ), the city’s youngest leader in 120 years. In spring 2022, Mayor Woodfin spoke with Anthony Flint about setting up a unified command center for Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and the American Rescue Plan Act funds, the city’s participation in a guaranteed-income pilot program for single mothers, and his vision for neighborhood revitalization. “We have to pave more streets,” he said. “We have to have adequate playground equipment. We have to partner with our power company to get more LED lights in that neighborhood, so people feel safe. We have to invest in healthy food options so our citizens can have a better quality of life. These are the things related to neighborhood revitalization that I frame and address to make sure people want to live in these places.” #MayorsDeskMonday is a series spotlighting the mayors featured in Anthony Flint’s recent book “Mayor’s Desk: 20 Conversations with Local Leaders Solving Global Problems.” Learn more about “Mayor’s Desk”: https://lnkd.in/et7kzed3 Buy the book: https://lnkd.in/eJwAE2RT

It’s National Park Advocacy Week! National parks are reaching a critical breaking point from declining budgets and staff, skyrocketing visitation, cumulating maintenance needs and worsening climate disasters. The good news: There are solutions available for lawmakers to act on right now. We're focused on four key actions this Park Advocacy Week: 1. Increase park funding by at least $250 million to help bring back thousands of park staff 2. Extend the Great American Outdoors Act to help #FixOurParks 3. Preserve our history by enacting the Cultural Resource Challenge 4. Tell the story of all Americans by supporting individual bills that expand our National Park System, including the Big Bend National Park Boundary Adjustment Act, Chesapeake National Recreation Area Act and Rim of the Valley Corridor Preservation Act. #ParkAdvocacy #FundOurParks #ParkProtection #LobbyDay #HillDay #NationalParks #ParkAdvocate
Tomorrow, over one hundred NPCA staffers and dedicated volunteers are heading to Capitol Hill to push Congress to protect — and fund — our national parks. While NPCA meets with members of Congress and the administration regularly about challenges impacting our national parks, our annual lobby day gives park advocates from across the country the opportunity to collectively speak up for the future of their national parks and communities. Congrats to our friend Rocket on his Ted Talk "Vermont: The Value of Hardship" for TEDx Hartland Hill's series, The Art of Living! What a refreshing take on the inherent BENEFITS of hardship: innovation, accountability, and cooperation - these are KEY qualities of Vermont living! Here at BRIC in Springfield, we're acutely and continuously aware of the myriad of challenges that rural life presents in the face of our community development efforts. If we're being honest, the list of obstacles and setbacks we encounter day to day often feels endless - like pushing a boulder up hill (both ways!) in the snow. Anyone boots on the ground doing this type of work knows it's not for the faint of heart, and in fact we often joke that you have to be a certain sort of glutton for punishment in order to ever actually make any progress. We know what we're doing is difficult, and that we're pushing against the odds with the things we're trying to accomplish - and somehow this awareness actually BOLSTERS our determination. The spirit of resilience and ingenuity is STRONG in Vermont. It's an inherent part of our identity. Whether it's snowstorms, early frosts, catastrophic flooding, workforce and housing shortages, food insecurity, busted leaking pipes - whatever the hurdle, Vermonters SHOW UP. We imagine possibilities, we work together, and we GET SHIT DONE. In spite of the challenges, there's nowhere we'd rather be! We believe in the power of our communities, we root for the underdog, and we WILL prevail. Thanks for the food for thought, Rocket! And for all that you're doing to help affect positive change here in Vermont! Baltimore’s claim-to-fame may be that it was the birthplace of America’s National Anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner,” but it's determined, down-to-earth spirit makes it a truly American city. With a dynamic Inner Harbor – the best view of which is from atop Federal Hill – that was as busy in the 18th Century as it is today. However, there are few things more quintessentially Baltimore than Maryland blue crabs. (The name comes from the color of their claws, but once cooked they turn a red-orange.) And while they can be found in the waters along the entire East Coast, Marylanders have perfected the art of eating them. In fact, more than a third of the country’s blue crab comes from the Chesapeake Bay! Baltimore has an exceptionally proud reputation for it's seafood and the Maryland blue crab served in many ways, leads the way! First Call opened our Baltimore, MD field office in May of 2015 and has performed hundreds of calls throughout DC, Maryland, and Virginia. As First Call continues to grow and expand, we have moved our Baltimore field office so that we can better serve our customers. Please make note of our new address and let Team Baltimore be your trusted resource in the Maryland, DC, and Virginia area when you need help the most! 512 Shaw Court, Suite 104, Severn, MD 21144 #SpillLife #FirstCallDifference #SpillNinja #FirstCallNation #environmentalcleanup #environmental #FirstCallCares #FirstCallFam #getbettereveryday #FCE #GBED #werehiring
