The McGregor Fund recently approved three Recovery & Restoration grants, totaling $1.25 million, for pathways to safety and healing from interpersonal and societal violence, abuse and inequity. These included a grant for $250,000 in start-up funding for the Dignity Restoration Project (DRP)/ The Global Development Incubator (GDI) to support a Chief Operating Officer and Development Director to raise funds for the DRP pilot, establish national fundraising tools, and build a storytelling platform, with direct cash transfers to begin for affected individuals via UpTogether, previously known as the Family Independence Initiative, also supported by the Fund. The DRP is a racial and economic justice initiative working to assist and restore dignity to Detroiters who lost their homes because of unlawful property assessments. Fiscally sponsored by GDI, the DRP will raise funds to compensate Detroit households affected by foreclosure, despite their qualification for property tax exemptions. DRP will work to increase local and national attention around discriminatory property tax administration that disproportionately affects Black owners. It will also elevate the voices of those affected – more than 100,000 Detroiters – by this continued structural injustice and the trauma it causes to individuals, families, and communities.

From the archives: In 1976, the New York Times published the first news story on CPC. In 1974, as New York City faced infrastructure decay, escalating crime rates, and falling housing values, an association of commercial banks led by David Rockefeller stepped up with an idea. They proposed focusing a small amount of pooled capital on a few neighborhoods—Crown Heights in Brooklyn and Washington Heights in Manhattan—in the hopes this would improve building quality and living conditions and help prevent the blight in surrounding neighborhoods from destabilizing them. With this modest proposal, the Community Preservation Corporation was formed. This innovative spirit on which we were founded lives on through the work we do each and every day and will continue into all of our future operations. “Where but in New York City would 11 commercial banks and 23 savings banks get together to form a non-profit housing corporation? Nowhere.” Please follow along all year long as we celebrate our 50th anniversary by highlighting the projects, people, and communities that have made CPC what it is today. ?? We are now the Fund for Housing and Opportunity! ?? As our nation grapples with our collective identity—what do we value, and what binds us together?—the question of who among us has access to a safe, stable, and affordable place to call home is central to the conversations and political decisions ahead. Rental prices continue to increase, and too many lawmakers continue to prioritize strategies that punish people experiencing homelessness instead of solving the underlying issues. The moment we’re in further crystallizes how people and communities most affected by housing injustice must always be at heart of our work. While our core beliefs and purpose remain the same, those who know us may notice we now have a new name. The change is subtle but meaningful:?We are now the Fund for Housing and Opportunity (FHO)—and we continue to be a leading collaborative working to protect renters and solve homelessness. Learn more ?? https://lnkd.in/g-5azZ36 This change—from “Funders” to “Fund”—is a part of our ongoing effort to modernize our operating structure to reflect FHO’s long-term and ongoing evolution from a funder-centric grantmaking model to more trust-based and restorative philanthropic practices. Through collaborative grantmaking, we can drive greater system-level impact, leverage shared resources, and amplify effective, innovative approaches to housing.?We look forward to all we will continue to accomplish—together—toward a future where all renters are protected and secure in stable housing, and everyone has a safe place to call home.

As #NonprofitProfessionals, we tend to wear many hats in our roles, but is that the best use of our individual skills and strengths for our organizations? In this interview by Nonprofit Quarterly, Sara Razavi, CEO of Working Solutions CDFI, offers her observations on what her work as a theater director has taught her about #NonprofitManagement. One of her key takeaways, is that as an organization grows, it needs to have strong functional lanes, in other words, each person needs to have a specific role and know what that role is. "I think strategic planning is how I think of this work. I bring everyone to the table, make sure they know to inform around their function, but because it’s a collaborative vision I hope they also speak freely of what they might see because they have the lens of being another person around the table trying to think as a team." - Sara Razavi What do you think about this approach to #NonprofitManagement? What works well for your team? We would love to know your thoughts and takeaways in the comments below! #OCNPN #NonprofitLeadership
