In my retail experience, it's definitely time for companies to adjust. We should be providing paid time off for major holidays, ensuring that employees can enjoy time with family and friends without financial concern. It's also time to consider including a mix of national, religious, and cultural holidays to accommodate a diverse workforce. There is no bigger promoter for work-life balance than holidays off. Let's encourage employees to disconnect from work during holidays to ensure they can fully enjoy their time off. From a company and financial standpoint, often you will end up paying more in salary than you'll make staying open during holidays.

Costco's recent announcement to close stores on Memorial Day marks a shift in retail trends. As major retailers adapt to changing consumer behaviors and strive to retain their workforce, this closure highlights the balance between convenience and employee well-being. With other big-box stores remaining open, it will be interesting to see how this impacts consumer demand and shopping patterns over the holiday. #RetailTrends #Costco #ConsumerBehavior #MemorialDay #RetailIndustry #BigBoxStores https://lnkd.in/gwjChjJY

NOSTALGIC RETAIL SERIES: #5 - A&P The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, better known as A&P, started as a mail order business around 1859. By 1920, there were 4,500 stores; by 1930, 15,000. In 1936, in Braddock, Pa., A&P opened a “supermarket.” By the 1950s, A&P was, briefly, what Walmart is now, the nation’s largest retailer, with a 75 percent share of America’s grocery business (sounds like a grocery monopoly to me!!). The chain filed for bankruptcy in 2010 and 2015, with the last store closing in 2016. A&P became stale and never adjusted to consumer’s moving to the suburbs and their changing shopping habits. Remember, when you are #1, there is nowhere to go but down! Its legacy: The chain created Woman’s Day magazine in the '30s to showcase recipes and ingredients available in-store. #Australian #retailers' same-store sales growth could slow as the pinch of higher inflation is fully felt by #consumers. Yet #Wesfarmers' Kmart department stores may stand out, with its "Anko" brand still appealing to price-conscious customers. Better efficiencies may help #margins, while #retail #media could propel medium-term sales #growth. To read more, click on the link below: https://lnkd.in/gd5p6-9F Bloomberg Intelligence

NOSTALGIC RETAIL SERIES: #4 - F.W. WOOLWORTH COMPANY Going old school here. Founded in 1879, Woolworth’s sold general merchandise and was called “five and dime” because everything sold for 10 cents or less (the precursor to dollar stores and Five Below). By 1929, there were 2,250 stores. “Despite its growing to be one of the largest retail chains in the world through most of the 20th century, increased competition led to its decline beginning in the 1980s, even while its sporting goods division grew.” [Wikipedia] The chain went out of business in July 1997, when the company decided to shift its primary focus to sporting goods (Footlocker believe it or not - so named in 2001). Woolworth’s name survived internationally, even though it had nothing to do with the U.S. company. Woolworths was an innovator and trendsetter that created many retail practices still in use today including merchandising strategies, direct purchasing, sales and customer service practices! ?? How do the country’s biggest retailers stack up against Dollar General? When most of us think of the biggest brick-and-mortar retailers in the country, we naturally think of Walmart, Target, maybe Costco Wholesale and The Home, among others. As a follow-up to my post about Dollar General's impressive 20,000-store milestone yesterday, here's an eye-opening snapshot of how they compare to the country's biggest retailers. ?? In terms of retail sales, Walmart, of course, takes the top spot. The retailer delivered over $611 billion in worldwide retail sales in 2023 (Walmart). ?? Net sales at Dollar General came in at $38.7 billion for DG's 2023 FY (Dollar General). In terms of store count, however, Dollar General is going where other retailers aren't and that's in the country's nooks and crannies to reach customers around the corner in their neighborhood. Here's how that plays out in numbers. ??Five states are home to 5,800 Dollar General stores--Texas, Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania- that's more stores than Walmart has across the country. (via Retail Dive) Check out the great graphic by Retail Dive below which shows how the stores compare in store count. Read more here: https://bit.ly/4aOt31T #TSCG #CREtail #RetailStores #CRE #Retail
