Time to revisit the ANSI Standards! ? Topic: “Safety Requirements for Machines Processing or Slitting Coiled or Non-Coiled Metal.” This standard applies to machines, and groups of machines arranged in production systems, for processing strip, sheet, or plate metal from a coiled or non-coiled configuration through machines that size or otherwise convert the metal into desired configurations. The terms “strip, sheet or plate” are used interchangeably without dimensional implications. Typical machinery systems include cut-to-length lines; press feed lines; and slitting lines. Do you need help with your safety standards? Our team of highly trained individuals will provide an in-depth risk assessment within your facility. ?? Did you know that the ASTM D4169 standard is a key pillar for ensuring packaging integrity during transportation? Let's delve into some of its major advantages: 1?? Reliable Standardization: ASTM D4169 establishes standardized procedures for conducting shock, vibration, compression tests, and other factors affecting packaging safety during transportation. This standardization provides a solid foundation for evaluating and enhancing packaging quality. 2?? Risk Reduction: By subjecting packaging to rigorous testing per ASTM D4169, potential safety issues during transportation can be identified and mitigated. This helps to reduce the risk of product damage, consequently lowering economic losses and customer dissatisfaction. 3?? Cost Savings: By ensuring that packaging meets ASTM D4169 standards, companies can avoid additional expenses associated with damage claims during transportation, product rework, or loss of customers due to damaged goods. 4?? Enhanced Reputation: Compliance with packaging regulations, such as ASTM D4169, demonstrates a commitment to product quality and safety. This can enhance the company's reputation among customers, increasing trust in its products and services. #ASTM #Packaging #Transportation #Quality #Safety #IndustryStandards #SafeLoadTT ?? It is better to do the study considering the actual fluid, operating conditions and operating modes. The crew should include process engineer, expert material engineer, equipment OEM and maybe reliability/rotating engineer. Most of the failures result due to deviations from original operating procedures/parameters, wrong selection and/or different feed composition. No need to limit your choices to a certain OEM, for sure some OEMs have good market feedback.
One area of confusion that we still see year after year is the responsibility for material selection for pumps covered by the API 610 specifications. (The recent Trillium webinar "Avoiding Common Pitfalls in Pump Selection" talked about a number of cases where this happened - you can check it out at https://okt.to/u8vfHQ ). API 610 is quite clear on this. To quote from API 610 12th edition 6.12.1.1: “The purchaser shall specify the material class for pump parts from Annex H, Table H.1. Annex G, Table G.1 provides a guide showing material classes that can be appropriate for various services.” To paraphrase this means that the purchaser of the equipment bears the ultimate responsibility for making the correct choice of materials for the pumps they are purchasing. 99.9% of the time, this isn’t an issue, as Table G.1 in API 610 provides good guidance on what materials to use for specific services, and most experienced pump users already have years (sometimes decades) of operational experience to inform their choices. However, there are rare instances where the wrong material class does get specified by the purchaser. Why this happens can be due to several factors, such as loss of experienced personnel, lack of available Standard Work or Design specifications, or simply that the process parameters are new. In such situations, Trillium can be your best pump OEM partner in preventing future problems. We have a deep understanding of pump materials (+ an inhouse metallurgist) and can help the purchaser review any areas of concern and make informed decisions that ensure the safety, reliability, and longevity of the pumping equipment.
