??Did you know that chickens and eggs are important part of community based rehabilitation of children with disabilities? In northern Mozambique, close to 50% of children under 5 identified with delays or disabilities suffer from malnutrition. Regular egg consumption is one strategy to address malnutrition in young children. So our local partner ADEMO has been supporting most vulnerable families with chickens and associated activities. But things are not that simple … chickens that lay eggs throughout the year are much more expensive to maintain as they require special chicken feed. The alternative are indigenous chickens, that lay eggs only a few times a year but are much easier to care for. However, when eggs are infrequent, the focus of the family becomes producing chickens for sale instead of producing eggs for the child.?? Some of the solutions we are discussing: 1) when giving 2 hens and 1 rooster to a family, encourage them to use eggs from one hen for reproduction and eggs from the other hen for the child; 2) encourage family to put some money aside from selling chickens to buy eggs for the child.?? And what would you do??? Gino Regina Rosario Manuel Melanie Remane Picolo Conrad N. Hilton Foundation

4.3 million children are growing up in poverty, hugely affecting their chances in life. We’ve drawn on the work of others – the End Child Poverty Coalition, the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF), the Trussell Trust and the Early Education and Childcare Coalition – whose campaign asks we’re getting behind asking for our government to make things fairer for every family, and every child. This week during the Labour Party (UK) Conference we are continuing to urge for the: ? Abolishment of the Two Child Limit so that there’s money to support ALL the children in the family. ? Introducing an Essentials Guarantee into Universal Credit so that the basic rate will at least cover life’s essentials. ? Guaranteeing affordable childcare so that all families have access to affordable, high-quality childcare provision. Let's work harder to end child poverty, so that every child has the chance to thrive. ? #BabyBanks #ChildPoverty #LabourPartyConference

Today on #WorldPorridgeDay, we recognize the vital role porridge plays in providing nutrition to vulnerable communities worldwide. In #Malawi, Likuni Phala, a fortified porridge, is a key tool in fighting hunger and malnutrition, especially among children living in poverty. At Open Arms, we provide this nutritious porridge to families caring for vulnerable infants at home, as well as to the nine community nursery schools we support.?This daily nutritious meal at school not only helps to prevent malnutrition in the 600+ children who attend, but also enhances cognitive learning and encourages school attendance, helping give children a brighter future. A simple meal, making a big difference. #NutritionMatters #EndHunger #ChildDevelopment ##NutritionMatters #NutritiousMeals #HungerRelief

#Fact A loving family is forcibly separated every 10 minutes in the US. The reason? The family lacked access to food, clothing, shelter, medical care, or childcare. #HR5028 - The Family Poverty is Not Child Neglect Act will stop this practice.? What could roughly?$4B?annually achieve for children and their families? It could provide every one of the close to 350,000 infants born or adopted in?Canada?with adequately paid, protected time with a parent or primary caregiver for the critical first months of life. Today, close to one-third of these new parents have no paid parental leave. An annual investment of?$4B?could lift thousands more out of poverty . It could also bolster their health and development if invested in school food programs – enough so that no child would have to make it through the school day hungry. A?$4B?annual budget boost could also bring children to the front of wait lists for health services. Children's Healthcare Canada has observed that children now wait longer than adults for many essential medical procedures. Delays in access to surgical interventions, child development support and mental health services alone cost health care systems billions of dollars annually. Measurably improving children's health and wellbeing while ending the cycle of childhood poverty are ambitious but attainable goals. All it takes is higher political purpose. That would be a nice treat for the kids this Halloween. Proud to co-author this piece with my thoughtful colleague, Lisa Wolff. ?? This Halloween, let's talk about the real treat: investing in our children’s future! While the federal government considers increasing OAS payments for seniors, child advocates are asking—what about kids? With $4B annually, we could lift thousands of children out of poverty, provide paid parental leave, and ensure no child goes hungry at school. It’s time to give our youngest citizens the care and attention they deserve. Let’s make children a priority at the parliamentary table! ???? On #equalpayday this NPR story about $7,500 in cash for expectant and new moms in Flint gave me hope. It is not enough - we need to change the systemic and structural barriers that lead to what the Economist called "the cost of motherhood" (see chart below), and we need to do more to reduce child poverty (e.g., Camber's work on Baby Bonds), but this is a start. https://lnkd.in/gBUaT_EW https://lnkd.in/g_c82GWZ #genderequality

In Scotland, 1 in 4 families are single-parent households, and over half live in poverty. One Parent Families Scotland’s manifesto for the 2024 General Election outlines crucial pledges for the first 50 days of a new government to address these issues. The five key pledges are: 1) Challenging discrimination against single parents. 2) Investing in a social security system to prevent child poverty. 3) Improving childcare support. 4) Aiding single parents in obtaining sustainable work. 5) Reforming the Child Maintenance System. At BabyReady Finance, we are passionate about supporting communities and parents in the UK because we understand the profound financial challenges they face. Raising a child is a significant financial commitment, and many families lack the resources and knowledge to navigate this journey effectively. Our mission is to bridge the financial knowledge gap and provide tools that empower parents to secure a better future for their children. We believe that by supporting parents with tailored financial solutions, we can foster stronger, more resilient communities. An important topic that needs more attention in Canadian organizations. Who are your people and what do they need? This is an initiative that can boost employee physical and mental health and well-being. This in turn will improve organizational wellbeing. It will reduce absenteeism and presenteeism. It will improve DEI initiatives and support pay equity. Bottom line, it’s good for business. #employeewellbeing #mentalhealth #organizationalwellbeing #DEI #parentaltopup #payequity
