??SUBJECT: USE OF D-SHACKLE ON PILOT LADDER (Deemed Unsafe) This is a refresher post. A frequently employed technique for securing a pilot ladder at an intermediate length involves utilizing a set of shackles positioned over the side ropes of the ladder and fastened to a deck pad eye. Initially, it may seem to provide a secure and straightforward means of securing the ladder, requiring minimal equipment and seamanship expertise. ?Nevertheless, the UK Flag State Administration considers this method noncompliant with SOLAS V 23. Additionally, PTR Holland, a reputable manufacturer of pilot ladders, regards this practice as highly hazardous. ?Use Rolling Hitch instead of the D-shackle to minimize shackle damage on the steps & future uneven steps.
