It's only a three weeks into the year, and I've already had three customers tell me they were living with pain from design decisions made by a third-party. In pulling apart the problems, in zero of the three companies was it a matter of not enough smart people or not smart-enough people. In two of the companies, it was an issue of not designing for supportability. This is a very common theme. The takeaway here is make sure if you're hiring an engineering partner to build something, compatibility with how the solution will be operated and maintained is often the difference between happy and sad later.
